18 PROCEEDINGS OF THE<br />

Secretary, Mr. B. V. Head. Since <strong>the</strong> publication<br />

<strong>of</strong> his<br />

important paper in June last, so much attention has been<br />

directed to this series <strong>of</strong> coins that nearly eighty new<br />

names <strong>of</strong> Ephesian magistrates have become known. As a<br />

consequence, <strong>the</strong>re are now in some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> periods into<br />

which <strong>the</strong> coinage has been divided more names than years,<br />

so that, though <strong>the</strong> names <strong>of</strong> many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Eponymi appear<br />

on <strong>the</strong> coins, it seems probable that <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> a magistrate<br />

appears on a coin, not as Eponymus, but as a member<br />

<strong>of</strong> a board <strong>of</strong> Prytaneis who had charge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mint. This<br />

slight modification but little affects <strong>the</strong> conclusions previously<br />

arrived at by Mr. Head, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> great value <strong>of</strong> his previous<br />

paper is enhanced <strong>and</strong> not impaired by <strong>the</strong> supplementary<br />

knowledge now obtained.<br />

Ano<strong>the</strong>r paper mainly on what must be classed as Greek<br />

<strong>numismatic</strong>s is that by my son on some recent discoveries <strong>of</strong><br />

Illyrian coins. <strong>The</strong> coins <strong>of</strong> Lissos, <strong>and</strong> those <strong>of</strong> Skodra, <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Macedonian type, both with <strong>and</strong> without <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> King<br />

Genthios, are new to science, <strong>and</strong> serve in <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> one so<br />

well acquainted with Illyrian history as <strong>the</strong> author <strong>of</strong> this<br />

paper to throw some light on an obscure period. <strong>The</strong> autonomous<br />

coins <strong>of</strong> Rhizon <strong>and</strong> some <strong>of</strong> those <strong>of</strong> King Ballseus<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> one <strong>of</strong> his successors are also novel, <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong>ir turn<br />

illustrate <strong>the</strong> period when Illyria had already become subject to<br />

<strong>the</strong> influence <strong>and</strong> power <strong>of</strong> Rome. What adds to <strong>the</strong> interest<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> paper is <strong>the</strong> fact that several <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coins described were<br />

picked up by <strong>the</strong> h<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> Mr. Arthur Evans himself, on <strong>the</strong><br />

site <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> ancient Rhizon or Rhizonium.<br />

<strong>The</strong> paper by Mr. Head on a Himyaritic tetradrachm <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Tre"sor de San' a occupies an intermediate position between<br />

Greek <strong>and</strong> Oriental <strong>numismatic</strong>s. That a tetradrachm so closely<br />

resembling those <strong>of</strong> Alex<strong>and</strong>er <strong>the</strong> Great but bearing <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong><br />

Ab-yatha should so long have escaped observation encourages <strong>the</strong><br />

hope that o<strong>the</strong>r coins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same class may yet be forthcoming.<br />

<strong>The</strong> style <strong>of</strong> art is peculiar, <strong>and</strong> could hardly have been
