ON THE IRISH COINS OF RICHARD III. 317<br />

<strong>the</strong> common people, still by virtue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said ordinance is<br />

nothing increased but diminished, that in consideration [<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>]<br />

inconveniences aforesaid by authority <strong>of</strong> this said Parliament<br />

it is ordained, enacted, <strong>and</strong> established that it shall be lawful<br />

for <strong>the</strong> master or masters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> [mint for <strong>the</strong>] King's coinage<br />

in this l<strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong> time being to forge, strike, stamp, coin,<br />

caused to be forged, stricken, coined aud stamped for <strong>the</strong><br />

[benefit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>] people, <strong>and</strong> increase as well <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> public good<br />

four kinds <strong>of</strong> silver or monies, to wit, groats, half-groats, pence,<br />

halfpence [in <strong>the</strong> same] manner as well as in every such place <strong>and</strong><br />

places as it is ordained to be stamped by <strong>the</strong> statute in this<br />

matter made in <strong>the</strong> Parliament late<br />

[holden] on <strong>the</strong> Monday<br />

next after <strong>the</strong> feast <strong>of</strong> St. Ka<strong>the</strong>rine <strong>the</strong> virgin, in <strong>the</strong> tenth<br />

year <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> reign <strong>of</strong> King Edward <strong>the</strong> fourth late King <strong>of</strong><br />

Engl<strong>and</strong>, [<strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> same] authority that <strong>the</strong> said four kinds<br />

<strong>of</strong> coins so to be forged, stamped, <strong>and</strong> coined, shall be forged,<br />

stamped, <strong>and</strong> coined, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fineness in [<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>] such<br />

assay with all such manner <strong>of</strong> remedies in <strong>the</strong> weight <strong>of</strong><br />

every twenty shillings <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>, for <strong>the</strong> master or masters aforesaid,<br />

<strong>the</strong> forging, stamping, [coining], <strong>and</strong> workmen <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong>,<br />

as by <strong>the</strong> statute, act, <strong>and</strong> ordinance in a parliament <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> said late King, holden at Dublin in <strong>the</strong> twelfth year <strong>of</strong><br />

his reign, was [enacte<br />

to be used for <strong>the</strong> !] right st<strong>and</strong>ard<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> groat, half-groat, penny, <strong>and</strong> halfpenny <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coin <strong>the</strong>n<br />

ordained <strong>and</strong> called <strong>the</strong> groat, half-groat, [penny <strong>and</strong>] half-<br />

penny <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Doubles, as under <strong>the</strong> stamp lately<br />

sent out <strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> our sovereign lord <strong>the</strong><br />

King is [made], used, aud stricken for <strong>the</strong> said coin <strong>and</strong> money,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> same so to be uttered, received, <strong>and</strong> passed current<br />

among his subjects <strong>of</strong> this l<strong>and</strong>, different from <strong>the</strong> stamps <strong>of</strong> his<br />

coin <strong>of</strong> his kingdom <strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>, to wit, <strong>the</strong> groats, half-groats,<br />

<strong>the</strong> pence, <strong>the</strong> half-pence, according to <strong>the</strong> said comm<strong>and</strong> to<br />

have on one side <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong> with a cross trefoil on<br />

Ricardus dei gratia Rex Angliaa et<br />

each end with inscription '<br />

Doininus Hiberniae," <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same three crowns<br />

one above <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r with a cross trefoil in each end bearing in<br />

<strong>the</strong> circumference <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> place where in<br />

<strong>the</strong> aforesaid form it shall be legally forged, stricken, <strong>and</strong><br />

coined, <strong>of</strong> which groats in form as it is aforesaid specified to<br />

be made <strong>and</strong> coined two hundred <strong>and</strong> twenty-five pieces with<br />

<strong>the</strong> remedies aforesaid shall make <strong>the</strong> pound <strong>of</strong> Troy weight,<br />

<strong>and</strong> every <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m not cut nor clipped by <strong>the</strong> same authority<br />

shall be taken <strong>and</strong> shall pass among all <strong>the</strong> King's subjects<br />

through <strong>and</strong> in all this l<strong>and</strong> at <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> four pence,<br />

<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> half-groat by <strong>the</strong> same authority shall be made with like<br />

manner <strong>of</strong> stamp as is before specified <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said groats, with
