<strong>the</strong> same inscription, or as far as it can be comprehended in <strong>the</strong><br />

same, according to <strong>the</strong> discretion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said master or masters<br />

or gravers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said coins, <strong>of</strong> which half-groats four hundred<br />

<strong>and</strong> fifty pieces shall make <strong>the</strong> pound <strong>of</strong> T[roy] weight, with<br />

<strong>the</strong> remedies aforesaid, <strong>and</strong> every such piece <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m not cut nor<br />

clipped, by <strong>the</strong> same authority shall be taken, <strong>and</strong> shall pass<br />

among all <strong>the</strong> King's [subjects] through <strong>and</strong> in all <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> at<br />

<strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> two pence, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> penny by <strong>the</strong> same<br />

authority shall be made in similar stamps with <strong>the</strong> said half<br />

[groats with] <strong>the</strong> same inscription as far as .can be contained<br />

in <strong>the</strong>m according to <strong>the</strong> discretions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> master or masters<br />

<strong>and</strong> gravers aforesaid, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> which pence [900 pieces] shall<br />

make <strong>the</strong> pound <strong>of</strong> Troy weight with <strong>the</strong> remedies aforesaid,<br />

<strong>and</strong> every <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se not cut nor clipped, by <strong>the</strong> same authority<br />

shall be taken [<strong>and</strong> shall pass among] all <strong>the</strong> King's subjects <strong>of</strong><br />

this l<strong>and</strong> at <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> value <strong>of</strong> one penny, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> halfpenny by<br />

<strong>the</strong> same authority shall be made in like [manner] <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said<br />

pence with <strong>the</strong> same inscription as far as can be contained in<br />

<strong>the</strong>m according to <strong>the</strong> discretions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said master or masters<br />

<strong>and</strong> gravers, <strong>of</strong> which halfpence eighteen hundred pieces shall<br />

make <strong>the</strong> pound <strong>of</strong> Troy weight, with <strong>the</strong> remedies aforesaid,<br />

<strong>and</strong> for <strong>the</strong> tranquillity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> common people it is ordained<br />

[<strong>and</strong> enacted by] <strong>the</strong> [same] authority to strike at least <strong>the</strong><br />

fifth part <strong>the</strong>re<strong>of</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> every such pound into small pieces,<br />

to wit, half-groats, pence, <strong>and</strong> halfpence, <strong>and</strong> also by <strong>the</strong> [same]<br />

it authority shall be lawful for <strong>the</strong> said master or masters in <strong>the</strong><br />

presence <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> comptroller or comptrollers <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King's mint<br />

or <strong>the</strong> deputy or de[puties]<br />

<strong>of</strong> any <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m for <strong>the</strong> time being,<br />

to receive <strong>the</strong>ir stuff <strong>and</strong> all lawful bullion brought to <strong>the</strong> same<br />

mint in cups, spoons, <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r work <strong>of</strong><br />

[silver] for <strong>the</strong> tranquillity<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> common people, which shall be understood <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

fineness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> said st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Doubles, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> same to<br />

forge, strike, <strong>and</strong> coin, or cause to be forged, stri[cken, <strong>and</strong><br />

coined] in manner <strong>and</strong> form aforesaid, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> bringer <strong>and</strong><br />

merchants shall have for every ounce <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir bullion <strong>and</strong> silver<br />

out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> mint four shillings <strong>and</strong> sixpence, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> master <strong>and</strong><br />

[masters] twopence, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> residue <strong>of</strong> every ounce shall be<br />

reserved, perceived, <strong>and</strong> received by <strong>the</strong> King, <strong>and</strong> that by <strong>the</strong><br />

same authority it shall be lawful for <strong>the</strong> governor <strong>of</strong> this l<strong>and</strong><br />

for <strong>the</strong> time being under his attestation as <strong>of</strong>ten as it is requisite,<br />

to direct <strong>the</strong> King's gracious writs to such person or persons<br />

who may know how to engrave dies for <strong>the</strong> stamps <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> aforesaid<br />

money, comm<strong>and</strong>ing <strong>the</strong>m or him to execute <strong>the</strong> King's<br />

comm<strong>and</strong> in this behalf directed, <strong>and</strong> that every such writs or<br />

writ by <strong>the</strong> same authority shall be adjudged a lawful authority<br />

<strong>and</strong> discharge in law for <strong>the</strong> sculpture <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same, <strong>and</strong> by <strong>the</strong>
