<strong>The</strong> suggestion put forward by Mr. Sharp in <strong>the</strong> last<br />

number <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Chronicle, that <strong>the</strong> word ON is an abbre-<br />

viation <strong>of</strong> M (ON) ETAKIUS seems a most likely pro-<br />

position, but it does not assist <strong>the</strong> solution <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> problem which has grown out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> original<br />

query as to <strong>the</strong> meaning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> word, <strong>and</strong> which, I<br />

suppose, must still be left ad referendum.<br />

I take this opportunity <strong>of</strong> stating that I have discovered,<br />

through <strong>the</strong> courtesy <strong>of</strong> Mr. Laessoe, keeper <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Royal</strong><br />

Cabinet at Copenhagen, that <strong>the</strong> coin figured on Plate X.,<br />

vol. xvi., No. 9, <strong>and</strong> which in that volume I referred to<br />

" Unknown German, eleventh Century," is a coin <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Emperor Henry II. <strong>of</strong> Germany (1002 1024), <strong>and</strong> was<br />

minted at Celle, near Dinant, in Belgium. A similar one<br />

is figured <strong>and</strong> described in <strong>the</strong> Revue Numismatique<br />

Beige (2nd Ser., vol. vi. PI. XX. No. 20), <strong>and</strong> is <strong>the</strong>re<br />

attributed to Henry IV.<br />

ERNEST H. WILLETT.
