<strong>The</strong> wheel as a Tanagrsean coin-type may have been<br />

borrowed from <strong>the</strong> wheel on <strong>the</strong> archaic coins <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

neighbouring Eubrean town <strong>of</strong> Chalcis, which was distant<br />

from Tanagra only about 100 stadia (circ. 12 English<br />

miles), <strong>and</strong> which must have been in constant commercial<br />

relations with Aulis, <strong>the</strong> port <strong>of</strong> Tanagra on <strong>the</strong> opposite<br />

bank <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Euripus. This interchange <strong>of</strong> coin-types<br />

between Tanagra <strong>and</strong> Chalcis is fur<strong>the</strong>r exemplified by a<br />

remarkable stater <strong>of</strong> Chalcis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Euboic st<strong>and</strong>ard in<br />

<strong>the</strong> cabinet <strong>of</strong> Dr. Imho<strong>of</strong>-Blumer, having on <strong>the</strong> obverse<br />

a Boeotian shield <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> letter Np'j <strong>the</strong> initial letter <strong>of</strong><br />

Chalcis, <strong>and</strong> on <strong>the</strong> reverse a wheel in an incuse square.<br />

Tanagra from Euboca, in this instance perhaps ra<strong>the</strong>r
