piece, 1889, by Wyon, bust <strong>of</strong> Queen to 1., with ornamented<br />

diadem <strong>and</strong> plain fillet, rev. DIRIGIT . DEVS, &c., Queen as<br />

Una leading lion, no garter on shoulder, 13 10s. ; ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

same date, but with fillet ornamented, rev. DIRIGE . DEVS .,<br />

similar type <strong>and</strong> garter on shoulder, 12 10s.; a pattern quarter-<br />

sovereign, 1853, rev. . QUARTER<br />

crowned, dividing date, 14 <strong>and</strong> a ; five-shilling piece, 1853,<br />

rev. FIVE . SHILLINGS . 1853, in three lines, under a crown,<br />

below, rose, thistle <strong>and</strong> shamrock, 14 10s. <strong>The</strong>re were a few<br />

Greek coins, among which was a fine Syracusan medallion or<br />

decadrachm <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> usual type, but no artist's signature, 30.<br />

BALE COLLECTION. In <strong>the</strong> large collection <strong>of</strong> works <strong>of</strong> art<br />

formed by Mr. Charles Sackville Bale, recently sold by public<br />

auction by Messrs. Christie, Hanson, <strong>and</strong> Woods, <strong>the</strong>re were<br />

some rare Greek <strong>and</strong> English coins, as well as a few English<br />

medals, <strong>and</strong> a very fine series <strong>of</strong> cinque-cento Italian medals.<br />

This portion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> collection was sold at King Street on <strong>the</strong><br />

30th <strong>and</strong> 81st May last, <strong>and</strong> comprised <strong>the</strong> following remarkable<br />

lots. Among <strong>the</strong> Greek coins, a medallion or decadrachm<br />

<strong>of</strong> Syracuse, with scallop shell behind head <strong>of</strong> Persephone, no<br />

artist's name, 18 ; ano<strong>the</strong>r, with scallop shell, <strong>and</strong> very fine,<br />

48 ; ano<strong>the</strong>r, with hair in sphendone <strong>and</strong> A0AA on reverse,<br />

56 also a tetradrachm <strong>of</strong> same ; place, with [APE0JOZA,<br />

full-faced head <strong>of</strong> Arethusa, with KIMflN on diadem, rev.<br />

ZYPAK . ZlflN, quadriga, <strong>and</strong> Victory on two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> horses'<br />

heads, in ex. ear <strong>of</strong> corn, 185. Of gold coins a stater <strong>of</strong><br />

Bruttii, with head <strong>of</strong> Neptune to 1., behind, trident, rev.<br />

BPETTIflN, nereid seated on hippocamp, in front, cornu-<br />

copia, 24 10s. <strong>and</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> ; Nicocles, King <strong>of</strong> Cyprus,<br />

BA, female head to 1., diademed, &c., rev. NI . female , head<br />

turreted to 1., 117. Among <strong>the</strong> English coins <strong>the</strong>re was only<br />

one coin <strong>of</strong> particular note. This was a specimen <strong>of</strong> Simon's<br />

Petition Crown, which realised 215. (This coin was originally<br />

presented to <strong>the</strong> Lord Chancellor Clarendon, <strong>and</strong> was in its<br />

original case.) <strong>The</strong> only English medal <strong>of</strong> any particular note<br />

was one in gold <strong>of</strong> General Monke as Lord General, by Thomas<br />

Simon, obv. head <strong>of</strong> Monke, rev. name <strong>and</strong> date 1660 in seven<br />

lines, 78 10s. Among <strong>the</strong> Italian <strong>the</strong>re were some very fine<br />

specimens <strong>of</strong> early castings, <strong>of</strong> which were a medal <strong>of</strong> Vittoriuo<br />

da Feltre, <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>the</strong>matician, by Pisano, with rev. pelican<br />

feeding its young ones, 49 7s. ; a fine casting <strong>of</strong> a medal <strong>of</strong><br />

Nicolo Piccinino by Pisano, with rev. winged griffin with<br />

PERVSIA inscribed on collar, but with no legend on obv.,<br />

19 19s. ; o<strong>the</strong>rs <strong>of</strong> Bartolommeo Colleone, by Guidiziani, rev,
