In <strong>the</strong> year 1858 I obtained this coin, which I believe<br />

is <strong>the</strong> only one known, <strong>and</strong> it is now in <strong>the</strong> <strong>Royal</strong> Irish<br />

Academy.<br />

Obv. A shield with plain border bearing <strong>the</strong> arms <strong>of</strong><br />

Engl<strong>and</strong> <strong>and</strong> France, surmounting a "cross<br />

trefoil," within a tressure <strong>of</strong> four single arches,<br />

outside which is a beaded circle, <strong>and</strong> in <strong>the</strong> cir-<br />

cumference <strong>the</strong> legend Elcar DVS Dei j |<br />

surmounting a cross trefoil, within a tressure <strong>of</strong><br />

eight double arches, outside which is a beaded<br />

PENNY.<br />

Snelling in his Supplement to Simon published a<br />

Waterford penny <strong>of</strong> Richard, which is reproduced in<br />

Lindsay, PL VI. fig. 132. <strong>The</strong> type is <strong>the</strong> King's head<br />

on obverse, cross <strong>and</strong> pellets with an open quatrefoil in<br />

<strong>the</strong> centre on <strong>the</strong> reverse ; it is similar to <strong>the</strong> Waterford<br />

penny <strong>of</strong> Edward IV. in Smith, PL IV. fig. 73.<br />

So much <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Act as has been considered is only a<br />

preamble to <strong>the</strong> ordinance for a new coinage to be made<br />

according to <strong>the</strong> statute passed 10 Edward IV., <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ard to be <strong>the</strong> same as <strong>the</strong> double <strong>of</strong> 1467, with
