names, <strong>and</strong> an examination <strong>of</strong> this list will show that 155,<br />

or nearly three-fourths, occur in one term only ; <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

remaining 65, 32 occur only in two towns, <strong>and</strong> 11 in but<br />

three, reducing <strong>the</strong> number <strong>of</strong> widely distributed names<br />

down to 22, or just one-tenth <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> whole ;<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se one,<br />

Le<strong>of</strong>wine, occurs in 19 towns, Godwine in 16, Elfwine<br />

in 13, Godric in 12, <strong>the</strong> rest are distributed as under.<br />

Four occur in 7 towns, four in 6, three in 5, <strong>and</strong> seven<br />

in 4.<br />

<strong>The</strong> following is a list <strong>of</strong> some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> peculiarly local<br />

names which, in <strong>the</strong> City Hoard at least, were only<br />

associated with <strong>the</strong> towns <strong>the</strong>y are connected with here.<br />

Being at present out <strong>of</strong> Engl<strong>and</strong>, I have no means <strong>of</strong><br />

referring to Ruding, Hawkins, or Hildebr<strong>and</strong>, but it<br />

would be interesting to see whe<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> connection is<br />

maintained in <strong>the</strong> coinage <strong>of</strong> previous <strong>and</strong> succeeding<br />
