Escapes from Qalakabusha Prison
1193. Mr J SELFE (DA) asked the Minister
of Correctional Services:
(1) Whether any official investigations
have been conducted into the second
attempted escape by inmates from
the Qalakabusha Prison in July 2008;
if not, why not; if so,
(2) whether the investigations has been
concluded; if not, why not; if so,
what were the findings;
(3) whether any action has been taken
against any officials in respect of the
attempted escape; if not, why not; if
so, what are the relevant details?

The MINISTER OF CORRECTIONAL
SERVICES:
(1) The attempted escape of five sentenced
offenders from Qalakabusha Correctional
Centre is currently under investigation
by a team appointed by the
Regional
Natal.
Commissioner KwaZulu-
(2) The investigation has not been concluded
as the team has to follow up on
information received during the taking
of statements. Follow up statements
have to be taken to confirm this information.
(3) No action has as yet been taken against
any officials as the recommendations
from the investigation report will provide
guidance as to whether disciplin-
