enced any shortfall on the subsidy<br />

budget. However, the DoT is anticipating<br />

a shortfall <strong>of</strong> about<br />

R1,2 billion on the bus subsidy<br />

during the current financial year.<br />

Due to a shortfall <strong>of</strong> R542 million<br />

that was carried over from the<br />

2007-08 financial year, the department<br />

has already spent<br />

(b)<br />

R2 424 million <strong>of</strong> the current budget<br />

<strong>of</strong> R2 829 million as at the end<br />

<strong>of</strong> September 2008. In terms <strong>of</strong> the<br />

department’s records and the expenditure<br />

trends from provinces,<br />

the available balance in the subsidy<br />

budget will be depleted in<br />

November 2008.<br />

The department is engaging the<br />

(c)<br />

National Treasury and has brought<br />

the matter to the attention <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Minister <strong>of</strong> Finance.<br />

Up to the end <strong>of</strong> September 2008,<br />

all operators have been paid their<br />

monthly subsidies and will be paid<br />

until November 2008.<br />

(2) (a) As part <strong>of</strong> the 2008-09 Adjustment<br />

Budget process, the Department <strong>of</strong><br />

Transport submitted an application<br />

for additional funding <strong>of</strong><br />

(b)<br />

R1,2 billion to the National Treasury<br />

in September 2008.<br />

The department was recently informed<br />

that no additional funds<br />

have been approved for bus subsidies.
