and Information Systems Division’s<br />

redesign <strong>of</strong> the division’s structure,<br />

Division will enable the DoD to better<br />

manage the resource information by clear<br />

clarification <strong>of</strong> roles and responsibilities in<br />

Action against <strong>of</strong>ficials<br />

Minister <strong>of</strong> Defence:<br />

Whether any disciplinary action was<br />

taken against <strong>of</strong>ficials in his department<br />

(a) in (i) 2005, (ii) 2006 and (iii) 2007 and<br />

(b) during the period 1 January up to<br />

30 September 2008; if not, why not; if so,<br />

(i) in how many instances and (ii) in each<br />

case (aa) what was the rank/position <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficial, (bb) what was the transgression<br />

and (cc) what disciplinary action was<br />

The MINISTER OF DEFENCE:<br />

Yes, disciplinary action was taken as follows:<br />

(a) (i) In 2005 the number <strong>of</strong> disciplinary<br />

actions taken against uniformed<br />

(military members) <strong>of</strong> the department<br />

by means <strong>of</strong> finalised military<br />

trials was 2 534. This number includes<br />

trials by means <strong>of</strong> disciplinary<br />

hearing by <strong>of</strong>ficers commanding<br />

units and trials by military judges.<br />

(ii) In 2006 the actions taken against<br />

uniformed (military members) <strong>of</strong> the<br />

department by means <strong>of</strong> finalised<br />

military trials is 2 060. This number<br />

includes trials by means <strong>of</strong> disciplinary<br />

hearing by <strong>of</strong>ficers commanding<br />

units and trials by military judges.<br />

(iii) In 2007 the actions taken against<br />

uniformed (military members) <strong>of</strong> the<br />

department by means <strong>of</strong> finalised<br />

military trials was 1 917. This number<br />

included trials by means <strong>of</strong> disciplinary<br />

hearing by <strong>of</strong>ficers commanding<br />

units and trials by military<br />

judges.<br />

(b) During the period 1 January-30 September<br />

2008, the number <strong>of</strong> disciplinary<br />

actions taken against uniformed<br />

(military members) <strong>of</strong> the department<br />

by means <strong>of</strong> finalised military trials was<br />

1 252. This number included trials by<br />

means <strong>of</strong> disciplinary hearing by <strong>of</strong>ficers<br />

commanding units and trials by<br />

military judges.<br />

(ii) (aa) Rank and position is not<br />

available<br />

(bb) Transgression. The vast majority<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fences are the various<br />

forms <strong>of</strong> absence without<br />

leave and dereliction <strong>of</strong> duty,
