(a) Run or do any kind <strong>of</strong> business, big or small, for<br />

himself/herself or with one or more partners?<br />

(b) Do any work for a wage, salary, commission or<br />

any payment in kind (excl. domestic work)?<br />

(c) Do any work as a domestic worker for a<br />

wage, salary, or any payment in kind?<br />

(d) Help unpaid in a household business <strong>of</strong> any<br />

kind?<br />

(e) Do any work on his/her own or the household’s<br />

plot, farm, food garden, cattle post or kraal, or<br />

help in growing farm produce or in looking after<br />

animals for the household?<br />

(f) Do any construction or major repair work on<br />

his/her own home, plot, cattle post or business<br />

or those <strong>of</strong> the household?<br />

(g) Catch any fish, prawns, shells, wild animals or<br />

other food for sale or household food?<br />

2.2 Even though . . . did not do any <strong>of</strong> these activities<br />

in the last seven days, does he/she have a job,<br />

business, or other economic or farming activity that<br />

he/she will definitely return to?<br />

In summary then in the old LFS employment<br />

comprised the following:<br />

● Having worked at least for an hour in<br />

the last seven days in either market or<br />

nonmarket activities (Question 2.1 in<br />

Table 1 above).<br />

● If a person had not done any <strong>of</strong> the<br />

activities listed in Question 2.1 in the<br />

last seven days, then they are considered<br />

as employed only if they have a<br />

job, business or other economic or<br />

farming activity that they will definitely<br />

return to (Question 2.2 in Table 1<br />

above).<br />

In the new LFS employment comprises the<br />

following:<br />

● Having worked for at least one hour in<br />

the previous week in market related<br />

LFS QLFS<br />

(a) Did you work for a wage, salary, commission or<br />

any payment in kind (including domestic work),<br />

even for only one hour?<br />

(b) Did you run or do any kind <strong>of</strong> business, big or<br />

small, for yourself or with one or more partners,<br />

even for only one hour?<br />

(c) Did you help without being paid in any kind <strong>of</strong><br />

business run by your household, even if it was<br />

for only one hour?<br />

2.5 In the last week, even though you did not do any<br />

work for pay, pr<strong>of</strong>it or helped unpaid in a household<br />

business, . . .<br />

(a) Did you have a paid job that you would<br />

definitely return to?<br />

(b) Did you have a business that you would<br />

definitely return to?<br />

(c) Did you have an unpaid job in any kind <strong>of</strong><br />

business run by your household that you would<br />

definitely return to?<br />

activities (Question 2.4 in Table 1<br />

above).<br />

● If a person had not done any <strong>of</strong> the<br />

activities listed in Question 2.4 in the<br />

previous week, then they are considered<br />

as employed only if they have a paid job<br />

or a business that they will definitely<br />

return to (question excludes unpaid<br />

household members even if they say<br />

they have a household business that<br />

they will definitely return to).<br />

● In the new LFS all those who were<br />

engaged only in non market activities in<br />

the previous week are taken through to<br />

questions on unemployment and inactivity<br />

and are not considered as employed.<br />

The question on nonmarket<br />

activities is asked in the following way<br />

(Table 2 below):
