Also included are criminal<br />

<strong>of</strong>fences, such as theft, fraud,<br />

crimen injuria and assault.<br />

Further <strong>of</strong>fences that are<br />

fairly frequent are those relating<br />

to the driving <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>ficial<br />

motor vehicles without<br />

authority, recklessly, etc.<br />

(cc) Disciplinary action. In most<br />

cases the <strong>of</strong>fenders are sentenced<br />

to a fine. In a number<br />

<strong>of</strong> cases <strong>of</strong>fenders were sentenced<br />

to imprisonment and<br />

discharged with ignominy<br />

from the SANDF. At times<br />

the sentences are suspended.<br />

Detention has also been used,<br />

coupled with reduction to the<br />

ranks where an <strong>of</strong>fender was<br />

a rank-bearing member.<br />

Future <strong>of</strong> Daphné submarines<br />

1795. Moulana M R SAYEDALI-SHAH<br />

(DA) asked the Minister <strong>of</strong> Defence:<br />

With reference to his reply to Question<br />

1385 on 9 October 2008, what happened<br />

to the older Daphné class submarines now<br />

that they have been replaced? NW2589E<br />

The MINISTER OF DEFENCE:<br />

(1) Two <strong>of</strong> the Daphné Class submarines<br />

(SAS Spear and SAS uMkhonto) were<br />

disposed <strong>of</strong> by the SA Navy as Category<br />

1 Weapon Systems whereafter<br />

the submarine hulls were alienated by<br />

the Armaments Corporation <strong>of</strong> <strong>South</strong><br />

<strong>Africa</strong> (Defence Materiel Disposal) in<br />

terms <strong>of</strong> prescripts after Ministerial<br />

Approval was granted for the disbandment<br />

<strong>of</strong> the submarines as units <strong>of</strong> the<br />

SA Navy as indicated below:<br />

(a) SAS Spear. The contract to sell the<br />

submarine was awarded to SA<br />

Metal and Machinery Co (Pty) Ltd<br />

who demolished the submarine in<br />

Simon’s Town as scrap during<br />

June/July 2003.<br />

(b) SAS uMkhonto. The contract to<br />

sell the submarine was awarded to<br />

SA Metal and Machinery Co (Pty)<br />

Ltd who demolished the submarine<br />

in Simon’s Town as scrap<br />

during July/August 2008.<br />

(2) The third submarine (SAS Assegaai has<br />

been decommissioned in November<br />

2003 and preserved as an exhibit at the<br />

SA Navy Museum in Simon’s Town.<br />

Flights undertaken<br />

1799. Mr G R MORGAN (DA) asked the<br />

Minister <strong>of</strong> Defence:<br />

(a) How many (i) international and (ii)<br />

national flights were undertaken by certain<br />

aircraft (details furnished) during the<br />

period 1 January 2007 up to the latest<br />

specified date for which information is<br />

available, (b) what was the (i) departure<br />

and arrival date and (ii) destination in<br />

each case, (c) who were passengers on<br />

each journey and (d) what was the (i) total<br />

cost and (ii) breakdown <strong>of</strong> such cost in<br />

respect <strong>of</strong> each journey? NW2594E
