In absence <strong>of</strong> a universally accepted<br />

definition regarding consultants per se,<br />

and if the aforementioned is taken as<br />

demarcation, the viewpoint is held that<br />

the Department <strong>of</strong> Safety and Security<br />

has none or at least very few consultants.<br />

(a) The primary objective towards the<br />

appointment <strong>of</strong> one former employee<br />

as a consultant during the<br />

2007-08 financial year was to<br />

optimise the structuring and organisation<br />

<strong>of</strong> the department, to<br />

strengthen the capacity to combat<br />

organised crime as well as to<br />

improve the effectiveness <strong>of</strong> policing<br />

and crime combating at local<br />

level.<br />

(b) The services <strong>of</strong> the employee was<br />

terminated as a result <strong>of</strong> early<br />

retirement.<br />

Inspection <strong>of</strong> police stations<br />

1471. Ms D KOHLER-BARNARD (DA)<br />

asked the Minister <strong>of</strong> Safety and Security:<br />

(a) How many police stations in each<br />

province (i) were inspected for com-<br />

pliance in accordance with the Occupational<br />

Health and Safety Act, Act<br />

85 <strong>of</strong> 1993, in each <strong>of</strong> the past three<br />

years and (ii) were assessed as (aa)<br />

compliant and (bb) noncompliant,<br />

(b) what were the findings for each<br />

police station in terms <strong>of</strong> each regulation<br />

in the Act, (c) what standard<br />

procedures are followed if a station<br />

is assessed as being noncompliant in<br />

terms <strong>of</strong> the Act and (d) what action<br />

has been taken to date to ensure<br />

compliance at each <strong>of</strong> the stations<br />

that were assessed as being noncompliant?<br />
