Automatic Passenger Counters. Automatic electronic equipment installed on a limited number of buses. The APCs count passengers boarding and alighting at each stop. Bus Rapid Transit is a broad term given to a variety of transportation systems that, through improvements to infrastructure, vehicles and scheduling, attempt to use buses to provide a service that is of a higher quality than an ordinary bus line. Each BRT system uses different improvements, although many improvements are shared by many BRT systems. The goal of such systems is to at least approach the service quality of rail transit while still enjoying the cost savings of bus transit. BRT applications range from express services using special purpose vehicles operating on exclusive right-of-ways to limited stop expresses operating along mixed traffic corridors with transit priority enhancements. Comprehensive Operational Assessment. Deadheading is a bus traveling when it is not in service. Deadheading can occur between the garage and the start or end of a route, or when a bus must travel between two routes. Federal Transit Administration. Geographic Information Systems is the generic name applied to a category of software that conducts spatial analysis and plots the results on maps. The leading provider of GIS software is ESRI, which has its headquarters in Redlands. Headway is the elapsed time between buses operating on the same route in the same direction. Headways on most Omnitrans routes are 15, 30, or 60 minutes. The integration of more than one bus route into a single schedule. When two routes are interlined, a specific bus would complete a trip on the first route, and then proceed to the second route before returning to the first route. The integration is transparent to the riders. Joint Powers Authority. Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Layover or Recovery Time provided during the scheduled operation of a bus to provide time for the bus to regain the correct schedule (e.g. if a bus is operating late or early), or to provide a short break for the driver. Most routes operated by Omnitrans have timed connections at Transcenters. A pulse occurs when buses on several routes all arrive and depart a specific Transcenter at the same time. Pomona Valley Transportation Authority. The name applied to Route 90, which connects San Bernardino and Riverside. Time that a bus and coach operator or bus driver are scheduled to be on duty and operating on a route. It includes layover time, but not deadheading. Riverside Transit Agency. The actual travel time it takes for a bus to travel between two fixed points. It usually refers to the travel time between terminals or between timepoints. San Bernardino Associated Governments. Southern California Association of Governments. Southern California Regional Rail Authority (Metrolink). The number of buses available as backups relative to the number of buses required to meet the peak bus pullout requirements; spares cover breakdowns, accidents and overload situations. FTA recommends a 20% spare bus ratio. Short Range Transit Plan. Similar to interlining, but in this case, the two halves of the route share a common route number so that they appear as a single through route. A bus stop designated in the timetable by having a specific arrival and/or departure time. A major transfer point where buses are timed to make connections.
