Another type of effort of course came from the publisher, Wm. С Brown
Company, and here the obvious leader was Jim Romig, Vice President. His courage
in calling the plays, especially the decision to use the innovative narrative approach,
was most instrumental in providing all of us with a sense of purpose and confidence in
our collective effort.
Greg Bell joined Wm. C. Brown Company as psychology editor at the most
important juncture in our progress toward the goal. Together with Sandy Schmidt and
Susan Soley, specialists in language and communication, they were successfully responsible
for guiding the overall operation on a day-to-day basis and for maintaining
cohesion among the diverse elements in this collaborative work.
Experienced personnel are most important in any group endeavor, and here
the presence of Mary Heller was critical. In addition to sagacity in matters of art and
photo research, her wisdom in the social context was always a steadying influence.
Special recognition also goes to Mark Christianson, who designed the whole
book with the imagination and flair that only an artist can provide. And he was willing
to work very hard, with the understanding that vision must be followed by re-vision
and further revision.
When specialists were needed, Julie Kennedy was most capable in production,
and Mavis Oeth in permissions. Their ability to enter into the arena at the right moment
with the necessary skills is testimony not only to their own personal qualities but,
most significantly, to the work environment at Wm. C. Brown Company, as well.
For all these reasons of the social climate and competence of its members, the
brothers Fernald are very proud and certainly gratified to have been members of this
team. It was a most pleasant experience.
