Studying Eidetic Imagery. The
subject is seated before an easel and
asked to stare at" a colored paper for
several seconds. If the subject
immediately gazes at the completely
white field, a negative after-image
appears. This procedure provides the
subject, especially a child, with
practice and encouragement in
describing something that is not
really present.
After a few trials, the actual
testing begins. The subject is shown
a simple scene in silhouette and is
instructed to move his or her eyes
around, studying all parts of the
picture. After several such trials,
detailed scenes are studied in the
same way (Gray & Gummerman,
1975).
