Adjustment as a Continuous
Process. The steady struggle for
adjustments revealed in the life and
work of Vincent Van Gogh, who
began his vocational career as an art
dealer, then turned to the ministry,
and finally became an artist. In
painting, he found he couid express
his ideas, doubts, and other feelings
while engaging in socially useful
work. In Girl in White, painted at a
time when he was undergoing
emotional turmoil, he expressed
feelings of loneliness and despair in
the girl's vacant gaze, drooping
shoulders, and awkward stance, all
amid the tender beauty of a summer
wheat field.
