Chapter 5: <strong>The</strong> Hungarian Jews<br />

NG-2237: A mimeographed copy of a telegram from Veesenmayer to the Foreign<br />

<strong>Of</strong>fice, dated June 10, reporting that the measures for the concentration of<br />

Jews located north of Budapest had started, and that deportation of the Jews<br />

would start June 11. <strong>The</strong> endorsement is a Foreign <strong>Of</strong>fice stamp and Thadden’s<br />

initials.<br />

NG-2238: Typewritten memo by Wagner proposing that negotiations with the<br />

Swiss and Swedes on emigration of Hungarian Jews be treated in a dilatory manner<br />

until the question of the treatment of the Jews remaining in Hungary had definitely<br />

been solved. Dated September 16, 1944. Signed by Wagner, initialed by<br />

Thadden and illegible others.<br />

NG-2262: A mimeographed copy of a telegram from Veesenmayer to Ritter,<br />

Dated May 4, reporting that evacuation of 310,000 Jews of the Carpathian and<br />

Transylvanian regions into Germany (“nach Deutschland”) is scheduled to begin<br />

in the middle of May. Four daily transports, each holding 3,000, are contemplated.<br />

<strong>The</strong> necessary rail arrangements will be made at a conference in Vienna on May<br />

4. Foreign <strong>Of</strong>fice stamp and Thadden’s initials.<br />

NG-2263: A mimeographed copy of a telegram from Veesenmayer to the Foreign<br />

<strong>Of</strong>fice, dated June 30, reporting that 381,661 Hungarian Jews had been deported<br />

as of June 30. Round-ups had started west of the Danube, not including<br />

Budapest, and also in the suburbs of Budapest. Foreign <strong>Of</strong>fice stamp and Thadden’s<br />

initials.<br />

NG-2424: In two parts. <strong>The</strong> first part is a typed letter from Foreign <strong>Of</strong>fice<br />

press chief Schmidt to Foreign <strong>Of</strong>fice Secretary of State Steengracht, dated May<br />

27, suggesting a propaganda campaign (“the discovery of explosives in Jewish<br />

clubs and synagogues,” etc.) to precede any actions against the Jews of Budapest.<br />

<strong>The</strong> endorsement is initialing by Wagner. <strong>The</strong> second part is a typed copy of a<br />

telegram from Thadden to Budapest, dated June 1, passing on the suggestion. Initialed<br />

by Wagner and Thadden.<br />

NG-2980: In three parts. <strong>The</strong> first part is a typed copy of a telegram from<br />

Wagner to Budapest, dated May 21, announcing a forthcoming visit to Budapest<br />

by Thadden, for negotiations on the Jewish problem. Stamped and initialed by<br />

Wagner. <strong>The</strong> second part is an unsigned carbon copy of a letter from Thadden to<br />

Wagner, constituting a covering letter for Thadden’s report on his activities in<br />

Budapest. Stamped Top Secret. <strong>The</strong> third part is the typed five page report, dated<br />

May 25. It is reported that special referent for Jewish questions at the German<br />

Embassy in Budapest von Adamovic, “has no idea of the actual intentions (or) of<br />

the practical application of the measure against the Jews.” He also reports a visit<br />

to Eichmann’s office, where he learned that 116,000 Jews had been deported to<br />

the Reich and that the deportation of another 200,000 was imminent. Concentration<br />

of about 250,000 Jews of the provinces north and northwest of Budapest will<br />

begin June 7. More plans are given. It is estimated that only about 80,000 Jews<br />

able to work will remain in Hungary. <strong>The</strong> entire operation is to be concluded by<br />

the end of July. <strong>The</strong> report is five pages long and the only endorsement is a top<br />

secret stamp on the first page.<br />

NG-5510:1 A typed copy of a telegram from Veesenmayer to the Foreign <strong>Of</strong>-<br />
