Appendix A: <strong>The</strong> ‘Statement’<br />

Hotel Mohren in Rottweil. Frau Gerstein’s discovery of such a document in the<br />

dark days of 1946 naturally buttressed her status as the wife of Saint Gerstein<br />

rather than the wife of ordinary SS officer Gerstein, an enviable position for a<br />

German at the time. <strong>The</strong> German version of the “Gerstein statement” is typewritten<br />

and unsigned and reproduced by Roques. 444<br />

What is presented above is what would normally be considered the “Gerstein<br />

statement,” but the statements allegedly (according to document 1553-PS) deposited<br />

by Gerstein in various languages in the spring of 1945 actually continue:<br />

“Kurt Gerstein, additional statement.<br />

In my flat in Berlin W 35, Buelowstrasse 47, second floor, left, I was surrounded<br />

by a circle of anti-Nazis. Here are some of their names:<br />

Major Lutz Reis, now at Hamburg, Glasurit-Works.<br />

officers of July 20,1944 to the scaffold. <strong>The</strong>se officers as well as my good<br />

friend, Pastor Martin Niemöller, smoked the cigarettes and cigars I got into<br />

the prison for them.<br />

Pastor Mochalski, who replaced Pastor Martin Niemöller at the Annon<br />

Church at Dahlem.<br />
