Prerequisite: ENG 167 and SPA 267 or equivalent proficiency<br />
as determinet1 by the instructor on the basis of prescribed<br />

Theory and practice ,;i gncoding and decoding electronically<br />
transmitted messages: telegraph or Telex, telephone or radio,<br />
television. Consideration of teleconferencing included.<br />
Communications strategies to reduce interference and ambiguity<br />
in messages; techniques to increase comprehension. Taught in<br />
English and Spanish.<br />

LIN 290 Fundamentals of Translation and<br />
Interpretatlonl3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 167 and SPA 267 or permission of instructor<br />
based on prescribed proficiency tests; concurrent enrollment in<br />
LIN 180 preferred.<br />
An introduction to translation and interpretation theory and<br />
practice. Emphasis on application; transla.tion of representative<br />
texts chosen from general and commercial contexts; interpretation<br />
of representative discourse chosen from avariety of social and<br />
business contexts. Familiarity with professional translation and<br />
interpretation practices, ethics and technology.<br />

Co~ers preliminary machine shop, introduction to machine tools, <br />

MAC 120* Machine Shop for Technicians 11/4 Units<br />
Prerequisite: MAC 110, OFT 112, GTC 100.<br />
General shop practice including athorough training in machine<br />
tool set-up operation and cutting tool techniques.<br />

MAC 130* Basic Metallurgy/3 Units<br />
Prerequisite: None.<br />
The study of steel classifications, heat treatment procedures,<br />
properties of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, and nondestructive<br />
testing.<br />

Prerequisite: MAC 120.<br />
The design and application of tools, jigs, and fixtures for basic<br />
metalworking and machine tools.<br />

Prerequisite: Sophomore standing in adeclared major and prior<br />
approval of Cooperative Education Program Coordinator.<br />
Asupervised Cooperative Education work experience involving<br />
the combined efforts of educators and employers to accomplish<br />
career objectives in machine technology. Variable cr~n (1-6) is<br />
available by special arrangement. May be taken four .tl~<br />
for amaximum of 16 credit hours. no more than 6umts In II<br />
