AJS 101 The Criminal Justice System/3 Units<br />
PrereqlJisite: None.<br />
Acritical examination of the major elements of the criminal justice<br />
system: police, courts, corrections with system analysis<br />
emphasized throughout, stressing the structure, functions and<br />
interdependence of each component. Topical areas include the<br />
investigative process, arrest, prosecution, defense, grand jury vs.<br />
petit jury, judges, probation and palole, sentencing and correction<br />
process, with aspeciar section examining th9 llf'lique<br />
characteristics of the juvenile justice system.<br />

Prerequisite: None.<br />
Asurvey of the history of police science in Europe and the United<br />
States. Previews medieval to modern law enforcement,<br />
philosophies, and techniques. Offers biographical sketches of<br />
leaders in law enforcement, their theories on crime and<br />
delinquency. Includes abrief overview of the criminal justice<br />
system, criminal law, police organization and organized crime in<br />
America.<br />

Apractical overview of prisoners' procedural due process and<br />

philosophy and history of correctional services, institutional subsystems,<br />

emphasis on the interdependence of corrections with both law<br />
enforcement an:1 the judiciary, correctional employee<br />
responSibilities, behavior modification, supervisory control<br />
techniques and rehabilitation in both confined and field settings.<br />
