courses. Credit earned on any of these may not be used towatd<br />

the 15 resident hours required for an M, AS, or MS degree. A<br />

maximum of 30 unitS will be allowed for credit for non-traditional<br />

<strong>Cochise</strong> <strong>College</strong> racognized that outstandinG scholarship is<br />

attained when the student attains scholastic maturity and<br />

possesses the motivation to pursue knowledge independently.<br />

Although this stage of academic achievement is normally<br />

expected at upper divicion and graduate levels, the <strong>College</strong><br />

further recognizes that many undergraduate students are<br />

prepared and have sufficient motivation to earn credit for sen·<br />

directed study.<br />

Independent study is defined as a project or series of<br />

assignments related to an area of study for which course offerings<br />

are not available. All divisions and departments make independent<br />

study available, subject to advance agreement by the full-time<br />

instructor and appropriate division chairman. Independent study<br />

The college provides independent study opportunities for<br />

students who;<br />

1. Have mastered core coursewOrK in agiven program area.<br />

2. Have achieved sophomore standing with acumulative grade<br />

point average of 3.0 or better.<br />

3. !-lave demonstrated the need for investigation into areas of<br />

knowledge that may not be included in existing formal courses.<br />

The student and instructor will meet to discuss the nature of the<br />

study. All requirements for successful completion of the study.<br />

including periodic meeting times, will be clearly established on an<br />

Independent Study Contract (Form VPI-7). Course credit is<br />

determined by the instructor and appropriate division chairman,<br />

and will be compatible with published academic standards and<br />

procedures. Units assigned to an independent study contract may<br />

not be increased or reduced after commencement of the study.<br />

Contracts must be completed within the semester in which study<br />
