Academic Regulations

or Instruction. Student petitions for the waiver of academic
'egulations may be presented to the Office of the Director of
~dmissions and Records through the student's counselor/advisor.

:reahman: Student with fewer than 28 passing units of
:ollege credit.
~ophomore: Student with 28 or more passing units of
:01l9ge credi~.
:ull·Time Student: Student carrying 12 or more units during
he semester.
'art·Time Student: Student carrying 1to 11 units during
I semester.

lrades are earned in each course and the grade is recorded on
he student's permanent record. Grade definitions are as follows:

Failure
~Ithdraw Failing (WF) - Indicates withdrawal from the class
tfter Friday of the ninth week with agrade below a'C' in the
:ourse. AGrade of 'WF' is computed in the student's grade point
Iverage as an 'F', or failure.
'Ilthdraw (W) - Indicates astudent has withdrawn from the
:ourse through Friday of the ninth week, or that he/she was
larning agrade of 'C' or better if the withdrawal was after the
:rlday defined above. Agrade of 'W' is not computed in the
itudent's grade point average.
Incomplete (I) - Indicates that for ajustifiable reason, such as a
serious Illness, the student failed to complete all requirements for
the course. When this happens. the instructor submits an
Incomplete Grade Contract to the Registration Office with the final
grade roster. Failure to make up an incomplete during the
succeeding semester will result In change from the grade "I' to
an 'F' on the permanent record unless there is acontract GI I file in
the Director of Admissions and Records Office stating otherwise.
The grade of 'I' is not computed in the student's grade point
average.
Audit (AU) - Courses may be taken for audit at the discretion of
the course instructor. Registration and fee policies are the same
as those for regular students. However, priority in registration will
be given those registering in acourse for credit
Passing (P) - Passing in apass-fail course.
Failure (XF) - Failure in apass-fail course.
Grading System
Semester grades are assigned grade points as follows:
A 4 grade points per unl, earned
B 3 grade points per unit earned
C 2 grade points per unit earned
o 1 grade points per unit earned
F o grade points per unit earned
WF o grade points per unit earned
Thus, athree-unit course with agrade of 'A' would earn (3x4) 12
grade points. The total grade points accumulated by astudent are
divided by the total of units attempted (excluding 'W', 'I' and 'AU'
grades) and the result is known as the student's cumulative grade
point average, or "GPA".
In determining academic standing at Cochise College. the "GPA~
of atransfer student is computed on the basis of units attempted
at Cochise College only and will not include units and grade
points earned at another college.
