obligations in relation to governance, the environment etc. While the airport is an essential
element of the community’s infrastructure, it competes with other programs and activities
for annual and ongoing investment funding. The community has an expectation about the
airport in relation to a number of factors.
2.8.1. Cost vs Benefits
Some of the costs to the community include:
· Impact on neighbouring community – noise, road traffic
· Environment – land use, flora and fauna, carbon emissions
· Lost opportunity for alternative uses of land and financial resources
Some of the benefits include:
· Financial – as an economic support for the region in terms of tourism, net revenue
from operations, aviation business revenue
· Connectivity with and for other business tourism and community support
2.8.2. Other Infrastructure Projects
The airport competes with other infrastructure projects within Council for funding, including:
· Roads
· Water and waste treatment
· Buildings, Parks and Gardens
· Playgrounds and swimming pools
2.8.3. Closure of Caloundra Aerodrome
Due to its location and the alternative uses to which the land on which it is situated could
be put, Caloundra aerodrome has been scheduled for closure in the medium term (2014).
A study is being conducting by the QLD Government to find a suitable replacement
location aerodrome.
The tenants and users of Caloundra aerodrome have an expectation that they will be able
to continue to enjoy the privileges of access and use of an airport within close proximity to
the two being closed. The outcomes of the replacement airport study therefore have
significant strategic implications to the New Runway Project and medium term
management of the airport, and will need to be incorporated in any subsequent review of
the project objectives.
