1. Audience.<br />

• What is the size <strong>and</strong> composition? Single Service or joint? Civilians? Foreign<br />

nationals?<br />

• Who are the ranking members <strong>and</strong> their official duty positions?<br />

• How well do they know the subject?<br />

• Are they generalists or specialists?<br />

• What are their interests?<br />

• What is the anticipated reaction?<br />

2. Purpose <strong>and</strong> Type.<br />

• Information briefing (to inform)?<br />

• Decision briefing (to obtain decision)?<br />

• Mission briefing (to review important details)?<br />

• <strong>Staff</strong> briefing (to exchange information)?<br />

3. Subject.<br />

• What is the specific subject?<br />

• What is the desired depth of coverage?<br />

• How much time is allocated?<br />

4. Classification.<br />

• What is the security classification?<br />

• Do all attendees meet this classification?<br />

5. Physical Facilities <strong>and</strong> Support Needed.<br />

• Where is the briefing to be presented?<br />

• What support is needed?<br />

• What are the security requirements, if needed?<br />

• What are the equipment requirements? Computer? Projector? Screen?<br />

6. Preparation Timeline <strong>and</strong> Schedule.<br />

• Prepare preliminary outline.<br />

• Determine requirements for training aids, assistants, <strong>and</strong> recorders.<br />

• Schedule rehearsals, facilities, <strong>and</strong> critiques.<br />

• Arrange for final review by responsible authority.<br />

COLLECT INFORMATION AND CONSTRUCT THE BRIEFING<br />

10-19. The briefing construction varies with type <strong>and</strong> purpose. (See Figure 10-4.) The analysis of the<br />

briefing determines the basis for this. Briefers follow these key steps to prepare a briefing:<br />

� Collect materials needed.<br />

� Prepare first draft.<br />

� Revise first draft <strong>and</strong> edit.<br />

� Plan use of visual aids.<br />

� Practice.<br />

DELIVER THE BRIEFING<br />

10-20. The success of a briefing depends on a concise, objective, accurate, clearly enunciated, <strong>and</strong><br />

forceful delivery. The briefer must also be confident <strong>and</strong> relaxed. The briefer should consider the<br />

following:<br />

� The basic purpose is to present the subject as directed <strong>and</strong> ensure the audience underst<strong>and</strong>s it.<br />

� Brevity precludes a lengthy introduction or summary.<br />

� Conclusions <strong>and</strong> recommendations must flow logically from facts <strong>and</strong> assumptions.<br />
