ARFOR<br />

The <strong>Army</strong> Service component headquarters for a joint task force or a joint <strong>and</strong> multinational force.<br />

assumption<br />

A supposition on the current situation or a presupposition on the future course of events, either or both<br />

assumed to be true in the absence of positive proof, necessary to enable the comm<strong>and</strong>er in the process<br />

of planning to complete an estimate of the situation <strong>and</strong> make a decision on the course of action.<br />

avenue of approach<br />

An air or ground route of an attacking force of a given size leading to its objective or to key terrain in<br />

its path. (JP 2-01.3)<br />

*backbrief<br />

A briefing by subordinates to the comm<strong>and</strong>er to review how subordinates intend to accomplish their<br />

mission.<br />

battle rhythm<br />

A deliberate daily cycle of comm<strong>and</strong>, staff, <strong>and</strong> unit activities intended to synchronize current <strong>and</strong><br />

future operations. (JP 3-33)<br />

A mission assigned to a unit that might be executed.<br />

*board<br />

(<strong>Army</strong>) A grouping of predetermined staff representatives with delegated decision authority for a<br />

particular purpose or function.<br />

campaign plan<br />

A joint operation plan for a series of related major operations aimed at achieving strategic or<br />

operational objectives within a given time <strong>and</strong> space. (JP 5-0)<br />

civil considerations<br />

The influence of manmade infrastructure, civilian institutions, <strong>and</strong> activities of the civilian leaders,<br />

populations, <strong>and</strong> organizations within an area of operations on the conduct of military operations.<br />

combat power<br />

(<strong>Army</strong>) The total means of destructive, constructive, <strong>and</strong> information capabilities that a military<br />

unit/formation can apply at a given time. <strong>Army</strong> forces generate combat power by converting potential<br />

into effective action. (FM 3-0)<br />

comm<strong>and</strong><br />

The authority that a comm<strong>and</strong>er in the armed forces lawfully exercises over subordinates by virtue of<br />

rank or assignment. Comm<strong>and</strong> includes the authority <strong>and</strong> responsibility for effectively using available<br />

resources <strong>and</strong> for planning the employment of, organizing, directing, coordinating, <strong>and</strong> controlling<br />

military forces for the accomplishment of assigned missions. It also includes responsibility for health,<br />

welfare, morale, <strong>and</strong> discipline of assigned personnel. (JP 1)<br />

*comm<strong>and</strong> group<br />

The comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> selected staff members who assist the comm<strong>and</strong>er in controlling operations away<br />

from a comm<strong>and</strong> post.<br />

(<strong>Army</strong>) A unit headquarters where the comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> staff perform their activities.<br />

A grouping of personnel <strong>and</strong> equipment organized by warfighting function or by planning horizon to<br />

facilitate the exercise of mission comm<strong>and</strong>.<br />
