Determine Specified, Implied, <strong>and</strong> Essential Tasks<br />

4-31. The staff analyzes the higher headquarters’ order <strong>and</strong> the higher comm<strong>and</strong>er’s guidance to determine<br />

their specified <strong>and</strong> implied tasks. In the context of operations, a task is a clearly defined <strong>and</strong> measurable<br />

activity accomplished by Soldiers, units, <strong>and</strong> organizations that may support or be supported by other tasks.<br />

The “what” of a mission statement is always a task. From the list of specified <strong>and</strong> implied tasks, the staff<br />

determines essential tasks for inclusion in the recommended mission statement.<br />

4-32. A specified task is a task specifically assigned to a unit by its higher headquarters. Paragraphs 2<br />

<strong>and</strong> 3 of the higher headquarters’ order or plan state specified tasks. Some tasks may be in paragraphs 4<br />
