The <strong>Staff</strong><br />
� Providing physical security guidance for comm<strong>and</strong>ers.<br />
� Assisting with area damage control <strong>and</strong> CBRN detection <strong>and</strong> reporting.<br />
� Helping the G-1 (AG) administer discipline, law, <strong>and</strong> order.<br />
� Preparing statistical data on absent without leave <strong>and</strong> desertion to the G-1 (AG) through the<br />
chief of protection.<br />
� Coordinating, along with the G-4, for all logistic requirements relative to enemy prisoners of<br />
war, civilian internees, U.S. military prisoners, <strong>and</strong> dislocated civilians.<br />
OPERATIONS RESEARCH AND SYSTEMS ANALYSIS OFFICER<br />
2-98. The operations research <strong>and</strong> system analysis officer conducts analysis in support of operations,<br />
across staff elements <strong>and</strong> forces employed. This officer’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to—<br />
� Managing, analyzing, <strong>and</strong> visualizing data using statistical, geospatial, spreadsheets, <strong>and</strong><br />
graphics software.<br />
� Developing customized tools for staff elements.<br />
� Providing quality control capability.<br />
� Supporting course of action analyses <strong>and</strong> operations planning.<br />
� Conducting assessments to determine effectiveness of an operation.<br />
� Conducting analyses to support the military decisionmaking process by all the staff.<br />
RED TEAM OFFICER<br />
2-99. The red team officer is a special staff officer coordinated by the chief of staff. Red teaming enables<br />
comm<strong>and</strong>ers to fully explore alternative plans <strong>and</strong> operations in the context of the operational environment<br />
<strong>and</strong> from the perspective of partners, adversaries, <strong>and</strong> others. Red teams assist the comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> staff<br />
with critical <strong>and</strong> creative thinking <strong>and</strong> help them avoid groupthink, mirror imaging, cultural missteps, <strong>and</strong><br />
tunnel vision throughout the conduct of operations. Red teams are part of the comm<strong>and</strong>er’s staff at division<br />
through theater army. Brigades may be augmented with a red team as required. <strong>Comm<strong>and</strong>er</strong>s use red teams<br />
to provide alternatives during planning, execution, <strong>and</strong> assessment. The red team officer’s duties <strong>and</strong><br />
responsibilities include, but are not limited to—<br />
� Broadening the underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the operational environment.<br />
� Assisting the comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong> staff in framing problems <strong>and</strong> defining end state conditions.<br />
� Challenging assumptions.<br />
� Ensuring the perspectives of the adversary <strong>and</strong> others are appropriately considered.<br />
� Aiding in identifying friendly <strong>and</strong> enemy vulnerabilities <strong>and</strong> opportunities.<br />
� Assisting in identifying areas for assessment.<br />
� Anticipating cultural perceptions of partners, adversaries, <strong>and</strong> others.<br />
� Conducting independent critical reviews <strong>and</strong> analyses of plans <strong>and</strong> concepts to identify potential<br />
weaknesses <strong>and</strong> vulnerabilities.<br />
SECRETARY OF THE GENERAL STAFF<br />
2-100. The secretary of the general staff (SGS) is the special staff officer who acts as XO for the COS.<br />
Corps, divisions, major support comm<strong>and</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> general officers with a staff are authorized a secretary of<br />
the general staff. SGS responsibilities include, but are not limited to—<br />
� Planning <strong>and</strong> supervising conferences chaired by the comm<strong>and</strong>er, deputy or assistant<br />
comm<strong>and</strong>ers, or the COS.<br />
� Directing preparation of itineraries for distinguished visitors to the headquarters <strong>and</strong> monitoring<br />
their execution.<br />
� Monitoring preparation <strong>and</strong> execution of all official social events <strong>and</strong> ceremonies involving the<br />
comm<strong>and</strong>er, deputy or assistant comm<strong>and</strong>ers, or the COS.<br />
� Acting as the informal point of contact for liaison officers.<br />
