Coordinate Personnel Support<br />

The <strong>Staff</strong><br />

2-38. Personnel support activities encompass those functions <strong>and</strong> activities that contribute to unit readiness<br />

by promoting fitness, building morale <strong>and</strong> cohesion, enhancing quality of life, <strong>and</strong> providing recreational,<br />

social, <strong>and</strong> other support services for Soldiers, <strong>Army</strong> civilians, <strong>and</strong> other personnel who deploy with the<br />

force. Personnel support encompasses the following functions: morale, welfare, <strong>and</strong> recreation (MWR),<br />

comm<strong>and</strong> interest programs, <strong>and</strong> <strong>Army</strong> b<strong>and</strong> operations. <strong>Comm<strong>and</strong>er</strong>s at all levels are responsible for the<br />

MWR support provided to their Soldiers <strong>and</strong> civilians. Comm<strong>and</strong> interest programs include family<br />

readiness, <strong>Army</strong> substance abuse program, suicide prevention program, <strong>and</strong> other programs as directed.<br />

<strong>Army</strong> b<strong>and</strong>s provide music for ceremonial <strong>and</strong> morale support in all operations to sustain Soldiers <strong>and</strong> to<br />

inspire leaders.<br />

Headquarters Management<br />

2-39. Headquarters management includes, but is not limited to—<br />

� Managing the organization <strong>and</strong> administration of the headquarters.<br />

� Providing administrative support for military <strong>and</strong> civilian personnel, including leaves, passes,<br />

counseling, transfers, awards, <strong>and</strong> personal affairs.<br />

� Providing information services, including publications, printing, distribution, <strong>and</strong> material for<br />

the Freedom of Information Act.<br />

� Providing administrative support for non-U.S. forces, foreign nationals, <strong>and</strong> civilian internees.<br />

� Administering discipline, law, <strong>and</strong> order (with the provost marshal), including desertion, courtmartial<br />

offenses, punishments, <strong>and</strong> straggler dispositions.<br />

ASSISTANT CHIEF OF STAFF, G-2 (S-2), INTELLIGENCE<br />

2-40. The ACOS, G-2 (S-2) is the chief of the intelligence warfighting function <strong>and</strong> the principal staff<br />

officer responsible for providing intelligence to support current <strong>and</strong> future operations <strong>and</strong> plans. This<br />

officer gathers <strong>and</strong> analyzes knowledge on enemy, terrain, weather, <strong>and</strong> civil considerations for the<br />

comm<strong>and</strong>er. The G-2 (S-2) leads the staff in the intelligence preparation of the battlefield process <strong>and</strong><br />

assists the G-3 (S-3) with developing <strong>and</strong> executing the reconnaissance <strong>and</strong> surveillance plan. The G-2<br />

(S-2) provides intelligence support to lethal <strong>and</strong> nonlethal targeting operations, ensuring units base<br />

targeting priorities on intelligence threat assessments <strong>and</strong> include the priorities in the reconnaissance <strong>and</strong><br />

surveillance plan. The G-2 (S-2) prepares Annex B (Intelligence) to the operation order or operation plan.<br />

(See FM 2-0 <strong>and</strong> FM 7-15 for more information on the duties <strong>and</strong> responsibilities of the G-2 [S-2].)<br />

2-41. The intelligence warfighting function includes the following tasks that facilitate the comm<strong>and</strong>er’s<br />

visualization <strong>and</strong> situational underst<strong>and</strong>ing of the operational environment:<br />

� Supporting force generation.<br />

� Supporting situational underst<strong>and</strong>ing.<br />

� Performing reconnaissance <strong>and</strong> surveillance.<br />

� Supporting targeting <strong>and</strong> information superiority.<br />

2-42. The G-2 (S-2) is also responsible for intelligence readiness, intelligence tasks, intelligence<br />

synchronization, other intelligence support, counterintelligence, <strong>and</strong> support to security programs. The G-2<br />

(S-2) has coordinating staff responsibility for the staff weather officer <strong>and</strong> the foreign disclosure officer.<br />

2-43. The G-2 (S-2) facilitates reconnaissance <strong>and</strong> surveillance integration by giving the comm<strong>and</strong>er <strong>and</strong><br />

G-3 (S-3) the initial intelligence synchronization plan <strong>and</strong> helping the G-3 (S-3) develop the initial<br />

reconnaissance <strong>and</strong> surveillance plan.<br />

2-44. Other intelligence support includes—<br />

� Supporting the conduct of collection operations:<br />

� Providing intelligence updates, other products, <strong>and</strong> additional support reconnaissance <strong>and</strong><br />

surveillance integration, the concept of operations, <strong>and</strong> mission accomplishment.<br />
