Sustainment<br />
The Military Decisionmaking Process<br />
� Establishes personnel recovery coordination measures.<br />
� Synchronizes air <strong>and</strong> missile defense.<br />
� Implements operational area security to include security of lines of communications,<br />
antiterrorism measures, <strong>and</strong> law enforcement operations.<br />
� Ensures survivability measures reduce vulnerabilities.<br />
� Refines chemical, biological, radiological, <strong>and</strong> nuclear operations.<br />
4-125. The following officers are responsible for sustainment during the war game:<br />
� ACOS, G-1 (S-1), personnel.<br />
� ACOS, G-4 (S-4), logistics.<br />
� ACOS, G-8, financial management.<br />
� Surgeon.<br />
4-126. During the war game, the G-1 (S-1) assesses the personnel aspect of building <strong>and</strong> maintaining the<br />
combat power of units. This officer identifies potential shortfalls <strong>and</strong> recommends COAs to ensure units<br />
maintain adequate manning to accomplish their mission. As the primary staff officer assessing the human<br />
resources planning considerations to support sustainment operations, the G-1 (S-1) provides human<br />
resources support for the operation.<br />
4-127. The G-4 (S-4) assesses the logistics feasibility of each war-gamed COA. This officer determines<br />
critical requirements for each logistics function (classes I through VII, IX, <strong>and</strong> X) <strong>and</strong> identifies potential<br />
problems <strong>and</strong> deficiencies. The G-4 (S-4) assesses the status of all logistics functions required to support<br />
the COA, including potential support required to provide essential services to the civilians, <strong>and</strong> compares it<br />
to available assets. This officer identifies potential shortfalls <strong>and</strong> recommends actions to eliminate or<br />
reduce their effects. While improvising can contribute to responsiveness, only accurately predicting<br />
requirements for each logistics function can ensure continuous sustainment. The logistics officer ensures<br />
that available movement times <strong>and</strong> assets support each COA.<br />
4-128. During the war game, the G-8 assesses the comm<strong>and</strong>er’s area of responsibility to determine the<br />
best COA for use of resources. This assessment includes both core functions of financial management:<br />
resource management <strong>and</strong> finance operations. This officer determines partner relationships (joint,<br />
interagency, intergovernmental, <strong>and</strong> multinational), requirements for special funding, <strong>and</strong> support to the<br />
procurement process.<br />
4-129. The surgeon section coordinates, monitors, <strong>and</strong> synchronizes the execution of the <strong>Army</strong> health<br />
system (AHS) activities for the comm<strong>and</strong> for each war-gamed COA to ensure a fit <strong>and</strong> healthy force.<br />
Mission Comm<strong>and</strong><br />
4-130. The following officers are responsible for aspects of mission comm<strong>and</strong> during the war game:<br />
� ACOS, G-6 (S-6), signal.<br />
� ACOS, G-7 (S-7), inform <strong>and</strong> influence activities.<br />
� ACOS, G-9 (S-9), civil affairs operations.<br />
� Red team officer.<br />
� <strong>Staff</strong> Judge Advocate.<br />
� Operations research <strong>and</strong> systems analysis officer.<br />
� Safety officer.<br />
4-131. The G-6 (S-6) assesses network operations, electromagnetic spectrum operations, network defense,<br />
<strong>and</strong> information protection feasibility of each war-gamed COA. The G-6 (S-6), determines communication<br />
systems requirements <strong>and</strong> compares them to available assets, identifies potential shortfalls, <strong>and</strong><br />
recommends actions to eliminate or reduce their effects.<br />
4-132. The G-7 (S-7) assesses how effectively the operations reflect the inform <strong>and</strong> influence activities;<br />
the effectiveness of capabilities to execute (deliver) inform <strong>and</strong> influence activities in support of each war-<br />
