The <strong>Staff</strong><br />

� Ensure effective liaison exchanges with higher, lower, <strong>and</strong> adjacent units <strong>and</strong> other organizations<br />

as required.<br />

� Supervise the sustainment of the headquarters <strong>and</strong> activities of the headquarters <strong>and</strong> headquarters<br />

battalion or company.<br />

� Supervise staff training <strong>and</strong> integration programs.<br />

� In division through <strong>Army</strong> Service component comm<strong>and</strong> headquarters, the COS personally<br />

supervises the knowledge management, operations research <strong>and</strong> system analysis, red team, <strong>and</strong><br />

special staff sections.<br />

Principal <strong>Staff</strong> <strong>Officer</strong>s<br />

2-29. The principal staff officers consist of officers from the coordinating, special, or personal staff<br />

sections. Paragraphs 2-31 through 2-75 discuss coordinating staff officers. Paragraphs 2-76 through 2-104<br />

discuss special staff officers. Paragraphs 2-105 through 2-114 discuss personal staff officers.<br />

COMMON STAFF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES<br />

2-30. Each staff section has specific duties <strong>and</strong> responsibilities by area of expertise. However, all staff<br />

sections share a set of common duties <strong>and</strong> responsibilities:<br />

� Advising <strong>and</strong> informing the comm<strong>and</strong>er.<br />

� Building <strong>and</strong> maintaining running estimates.<br />

� Providing recommendations.<br />

� Preparing plans, orders, <strong>and</strong> other staff writing.<br />

� Assessing operations.<br />

� Managing information within area of expertise.<br />

� Identifying <strong>and</strong> analyzing problems.<br />

� Coordinating staff.<br />

� Conducting staff assistance visits.<br />

� Performing composite risk management.<br />

� Performing intelligence preparation of the battlefield.<br />

� Conducting staff inspections.<br />

� Completing staff research.<br />

� Performing staff administrative procedures.<br />

� Exercising staff supervision over their area of expertise.<br />

COORDINATING STAFF OFFICERS<br />

2-31. Coordinating staff officers are the comm<strong>and</strong>er’s principal assistants who advise, plan, <strong>and</strong> coordinate<br />

actions within their area of expertise or a warfighting function. Collectively, through the COS or XO,<br />

coordinating staff officers answer to the comm<strong>and</strong>er. <strong>Comm<strong>and</strong>er</strong>s may designate coordinating staff<br />

officers as assistant chiefs of staff, deputy chiefs of staff, chiefs of a warfighting function, or staff officers.<br />

Coordinating staff officers also exercise planning <strong>and</strong> supervisory authority over designated special staff<br />

officers as designated.<br />

2-32. The coordinating staff consists of the following positions:<br />

� Assistant chief of staff (ACOS), G-1 (S-1)—personnel.<br />

� ACOS, G-2 (S-2)—intelligence.<br />

� ACOS, G-3 (S-3)—operations.<br />

� ACOS, G-4 (S-4)—logistics.<br />

� ACOS, G-5—plans.<br />

� ACOS, G-6 (S-6)—signal.<br />

� ACOS, G-7 (S-7)—inform <strong>and</strong> influence activities.<br />
