Nev er the less, the weap ons have grown si lent.Con ceited and criminal megalomania, which has been fight ing the com -bined moral and in tel lec tual pow ers of mankind for so long, now lies sup -pressed and in chains. Peace must be guaranteed, peo ples yearn forfree dom, and laws need to be mod i fied. Life goes on, new events are rap -idly un fold ing, old ones are forgotten. During the last de cade, how ever,much has hap pened; peo ple must al ways be reminded of it, and it mustnever be forgotten.The most pain ful of these is what hap pened to the Jews of Eu rope. In thiswar—apart from the peo ples of the Soviet Un ion—it was the Jews whoun self ishly placed them selves, their enthusiasm and their ad o ra tion at thedis posal of their home land and her high moral ide als. Theirs was the mostmoving blood sac ri fice of history. We can not find any other nation in theworld who has sac ri ficed as many of her sons for her homeland, for jus tice,lib erty and hu man ity as Jews have—even if we consider all the Allied Na -tions together.And yet, the time has not come for the com plete history of Jewish suf fer -ings between 1933 and 1944 to be writ ten.In ves ti ga tions, the gath er ing of data and re search have been carried outthrough out the world (the Anti-Fas cist Com mit tee in Mos cow, the BlackBook Com mit tee in Amer ica, the Jew ish World Fed er a tion, etc.), but sofar no one has been brave enough to cre ate a body of work that could bequal i fied as an historical piece.11
