Life and Death <strong>in</strong> TransnistriaThe Chronological Order of EventsOctober 1,1941 - March 20,1944October 1, 1941The first Ro ma nian Jewish de port ees to step onto Transnistrian soil werethe most un for tu nate. They were Bessarabian Jews, collected <strong>in</strong> Au gustsurvi vors of the mas sa cres. They were driven here and there on both sidesof the Dniester first by the Ro ma nian, then by the German army. Theycrossed Moghilau and were al lowed to rest <strong>in</strong> Scaz<strong>in</strong>et . After be <strong>in</strong>g tor -tured, robbed and starved, one third of them had per ished be fore they ar -rived at the ghastly camp <strong>in</strong> Vertujeni . The first march<strong>in</strong>g col umnsde parted from there on Sep tem ber 16, to cross the river Dniester af ter twomore weeks of suf fer <strong>in</strong>g at two places: those driven to wards Iampol crossednear Cosauti , oth ers taken to Rabnita did the same near Rez<strong>in</strong>a . The newmarch <strong>in</strong>g col umns, which were later driven to wards the river Bug, were as -sem bled at these two gates of Transnistria . The first march <strong>in</strong>g column wasal lowed to rest <strong>in</strong> Barzula , then ar rived <strong>in</strong> Grozdovca and stayed there.Through out the entire jour ney they had to with stand the beat <strong>in</strong>g and jeer -<strong>in</strong>g of non-commissioned of fi cer Tarca , on whose or ders sev eral de port eeswere ex e cuted. Later, after they had rested, they found them selves <strong>in</strong> thehands of a corporal who con sid ered himself the leader of the camp ofGrozdovca . He counted them, while tak<strong>in</strong>g them over, hitt<strong>in</strong>g each one onthe back with an iron bar.The march<strong>in</strong>g columns moved on different routes but all suffered anunfortunate fate. /.../November 1, 1941Throughout the month of October march<strong>in</strong>g column followed march<strong>in</strong>gcolumn through the three cross<strong>in</strong>g-po<strong>in</strong>ts ( Rabnita , Iampol andMoghilev ).
