October 9, 1941In Southern-Bucov<strong>in</strong>a the deportation of Jews starts simultaneously <strong>in</strong>every village.At dawn it is made known to the public by spoken order, by town-criersand by the post<strong>in</strong>g of notices that all Jews must leave the place <strong>in</strong> theshortest time possible (<strong>in</strong> Suceava with<strong>in</strong> 8 hours, and <strong>in</strong> Itcani with<strong>in</strong> 4),and everyone is allowed to br<strong>in</strong>g with them as much as they can carry. /.../October 10, 1941Measures are ordered to be taken for the organization of the ghetto <strong>in</strong>Chernovitz , and for the deportation of all Jews from the area ofNorthern-Bucov<strong>in</strong>a .Firstly, on October 11, the entire Jewish community of Chernovitz isghettoized .From the ghetto they are gradually transported to the first <strong>in</strong>dicatedstations (two tra<strong>in</strong>s of fifty boxcars depart daily).From this day forth, all Jewish property becomes of the property of thestate.The task of collect<strong>in</strong>g all the Jews, guard<strong>in</strong>g the ghetto, load<strong>in</strong>g them ontothe tra<strong>in</strong> and guard<strong>in</strong>g it, is the responsibility of the Military Headquartersof Bucov<strong>in</strong>a , and the Gendarme Inspectorate of Chernovitz . Theirnumber has been <strong>in</strong>creased by a battalion directed there to help <strong>in</strong> theexecution of these tasks. /.../October 11, 1941The Jews of Chernovitz are ghettoized with special care.It is impossible to imag<strong>in</strong>e a picture more heartbreak<strong>in</strong>g than that ofChernovitz on that day.
