Only after years ofexhaustive re search will teams of learned historians work ing under thelead er ship of such outstanding personalities as Ilia Ehrenburg , VasiliGrossmann (from the Anti-fas cist Com mit tee of Moscow), or Pro fes sorAlbert Einstein and Sha lom Asch (from the Amer i can Black Book Com -mit tee) be able to pres ent the history of Jew ish suf fer ing during the fas cisthe ge mony.Science is slow. But we, who have ex pe ri enced all the com mo tion, struggleand suf fer ings of this era, need to learn everything that happened so as tobe able to form a con cep tion of it which, al though not ho lis tic, is still suf fi -ciently lucid and close to the truth.It is for this reason that I had al ready de cided to write this book when I sawand felt that our cause, which is an organic com po nent of history, willsurely win out, since history will turn the scales in our fa vor, or perish if itfails to do so.I wrote this book of blood and tears with blood and tears to help my breth -ren find new in cen tives and objectives in life by remembering the pains ex -pe ri enced, and blows re ceived, in the hope that they will dis cover means ofself-de fense in the fu ture, and so that the anger and dis gust cre ated by theevents pre sented here with should make oth ers acknowledge that they com -mitted a great num ber of crimes against the mem bers of our com mu nity.They must provide comfort for the pain and go a long way to wards easingtheir conscience by accepting re spon si bil ity in the eyes of his tory.I refrained from cre at ing a work of lit er a ture. Do not look for sty lis ticturns, met a phors, epic de scrip tions and ve hi cles for tragic pa thos in thisbook. I even tried to avoid the use of qualifying ad jec tives.I also refrained from com mend ing, judg ing, or de fend ing one point ofview over another, and prais ing vir tues or curs ing sins.
