Robb<strong>in</strong>g EvacueesThe Jew ish cit i zens of the coun try, once re moved from towns and vil lageswere robbed. /.../ Carters and mem bers of the Gendarmerie took all thevalu ables these poor peo ple were able to carry. In many areas, such acts ofloot<strong>in</strong>g were com pleted by locals with the bless <strong>in</strong>g of the au thor i ties. Ev -ery th<strong>in</strong>g was re moved from un <strong>in</strong> hab ited Jewish homes, even w<strong>in</strong>dowframes and the t<strong>in</strong> from roofs. In some places, even tomb stones were takenfrom Jewish cem e ter ies so that they could be used as steps at the en trancesof houses.At a later stage the state it self jo<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> this rob bery by pass <strong>in</strong>g a law or der -<strong>in</strong>g an auc tion of evacuees’ property, which was re garded as aban doned.3. Robb<strong>in</strong>g DeporteesThe robb<strong>in</strong>g of deportees, carried out with bes tial rage and <strong>in</strong>satiable av a -rice by the au thor i ties (Na tional Centre for <strong>Romania</strong>nization , the Na -tional Bank of <strong>Romania</strong>, County Halls, City Halls, etc.), of fi cials <strong>in</strong> chargeof deportations (of fi cers, po lice <strong>in</strong>spectors, Gen darmes, po lice con sta bles,etc.) and the lo cal Aryan citizens, was more se ri ous and more de struc tive <strong>in</strong>its con se quences.Jews were robbed ev ery where: when the occupy<strong>in</strong>g troops marched <strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong>con cen tra tion camps and ghet tos, dur<strong>in</strong>g the long and lonely wan der <strong>in</strong>gsof march <strong>in</strong>g col umns, while cross<strong>in</strong>g the river Dnyester , and fi nally, <strong>in</strong> thecamps and ghet tos of Transnistria .(a) Loot<strong>in</strong>g flats: /.../ What had been left be h<strong>in</strong>d by the occupy<strong>in</strong>g troops,was confiscated by the au thor i ties s<strong>in</strong>ce Jews were only al lowed to takewith them to the ghettos or camps as much as they could carry on theirbacks, and many times not even that.
