Accord<strong>in</strong>g to the last official cen sus on De cem ber 19, 1930, therewere 756,930 peo ple. More than one third of these (314,933) lived <strong>in</strong> thecoun ties of Bessarabia, Bucov<strong>in</strong>a and Dorohoi .Note: Accord<strong>in</strong>g to a survey carried out by the Central Statistical Office onSeptember 1, 1941, after the first two months of the war, only 151,121 ofthis number had survived.The racially based census taken on May 20, 1942 <strong>in</strong>dicated that only19,576 Jews were liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> these counties. However, <strong>in</strong> the so-called“Transnistrian ” camps and ghettos about 60,000 people were alive at thistime.June 29, 1940In ac cor dance with the execution of the agreement on the hand over ofBessarabia and the north ern Bucov<strong>in</strong>a re gion, as well as a num ber of set tle -ments <strong>in</strong> Dorohoi county, the with drawal of Ro ma nian troops be ganalong the en tire length of the border from the Ceremus to the Dan ube. Itseems that the troops which withdrew across the bridges of the Prut fromGalati to Herta , were com posed and be haved decently. In any case, no ex -traor di nary events were recorded con cern <strong>in</strong>g them. However, the troopswhich with draw to Bucov<strong>in</strong>a after cross <strong>in</strong>g the Prut and the Siret , com mit -ted hor ri ble crimes and ter ri fy <strong>in</strong>g mas sa cres, which claimed the lives of agreat num ber of Jew ish vil lag ers and towns peo ple.159
