Internment and HostagesDur<strong>in</strong>g the reign of the Iron Guard Jews were al ready be<strong>in</strong>g sent <strong>in</strong> di vid u -ally to the con cen tra tion camp at Targu Jiu. Internment cont<strong>in</strong>ued on amuch larger scale fol low <strong>in</strong>g the out break of war. Entire pop u la tions were<strong>in</strong> terned <strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> areas ( Constan , Siret , Darabani), <strong>in</strong> oth ers ( Galati ,Ploiesti, Husi , Dorohoi) ev ery healthy man, and <strong>in</strong> more ( Piatra Neamt ,Focsani, Felticeni , Buzau ) most men were <strong>in</strong> terned. 31X. GhettosAt the be g<strong>in</strong> n<strong>in</strong>g of Au gust, fol low <strong>in</strong>g the oc cu pa tion of Bessarabia andBucov<strong>in</strong>a , the sur vi vors <strong>in</strong> these regions were collected from he Jew ishcom mu ni ties, and placed <strong>in</strong> five centers. Their num bers on 1st Sep tem ber1941 were the follow<strong>in</strong>g 32 :-<strong>in</strong> the ghettos of Secureni and Ed<strong>in</strong>e ( Hot<strong>in</strong> county): 20,909;-<strong>in</strong> the Marculesti ghetto ( Soroca county): 10,737-<strong>in</strong> the Vertujeni ghetto ( Soroca county): 24,000-<strong>in</strong> the town of Chernovitz : 49,497 33XI. DeportationsBetween Sep tem ber 1941 and Oc to ber 1942 one third of the surviv<strong>in</strong>gJew ish pop u la tion of the coun try was de ported be yond the Dnyester . Theprop erty of de port ees was ei ther confiscated, robbed or de stroyed. The cir -cum stances <strong>in</strong> which the de por ta tion took place led to the death of largenum bers en route. Half of those who arrived at the con cen tra tion campsand ghettos of Transnistna per ished dur <strong>in</strong>g the first w<strong>in</strong> ter. The sur vi vorslived <strong>in</strong> the most mis er a ble con di tions imag <strong>in</strong> able; they were sur roundedby illness, hun ger and other hard ships; they suffered the ter ror of neverend <strong>in</strong>g harassment, and feared death every moment.31 Gen eral Or der of the M<strong>in</strong>istry of the In te rior No.4599 on June 30,1941.40
