The first murders were committed <strong>in</strong> Mihoreni ( Dorohoi county) by amilitary unit under the command of a major named Gilav . For noapparent reason, the soldiers arrested and tortured Sloime We<strong>in</strong>er, his son,User We<strong>in</strong>er, his daughters, Roza We<strong>in</strong>er and Fani Zekler (the latter washold<strong>in</strong>g a two-year-old child <strong>in</strong> her arms). They were taken to a forestcalled Tureatca , where a lame cobbler, Moscovici, his wife and twochildren, as well as Isac Moscovici’s wife and two daughters were alsofound. All of them were l<strong>in</strong>ed up at the edge of a hole and shot <strong>in</strong>to it. IsacMoscovici, who had been arrested separately, was so severely beaten that hedied on the way to hospital.June 30, 1940Part of the 16th <strong>in</strong>fantry regiment, under the command of Major ValeriuCarp, withdrew from the north-western part of Bucov<strong>in</strong>a towardsFalticeni . Immediately after the unit had marched <strong>in</strong>to the village ofCiudei ( Stroj<strong>in</strong>et county), a number of Jews were collected at the villagecenter follow<strong>in</strong>g an order by the Major. These were: Moise Schachter , Dr.Konrad Kreis , the Hessman brothers, Herman Gross, his wife, hisdaughter and grandchild. All of them were shot dead. Dr. Kreis wastortured with extraord<strong>in</strong>ary cruelty, and his body was - literally - cut up<strong>in</strong>to pieces.June 30, 1940A group of 18 soldiers, led by a lieutenant, broke <strong>in</strong>to the house of SuharLax, who lived <strong>in</strong> Cost<strong>in</strong>a-Suceava . After tortur<strong>in</strong>g him, they tied him to ahorse’s tail and had him dragged across the village (nearly 3 km). His body,ridden with twenty bullets, was found <strong>in</strong> a nearby forest.July 1, 1940The withdraw<strong>in</strong>g military units carried out a barbaric and murderouspogrom <strong>in</strong> the town of Dorohoi .The morn<strong>in</strong>g streets of the city showed signs of extraord<strong>in</strong>ary activity, andthe Jews of the town began to panic.
