The latest announcements of themilitary and civilian authorities (General Command and the M<strong>in</strong>istry ofthe Interior), with their stereotyped and hurtful refra<strong>in</strong>s (“they will bedeported to Transnistria along with their families”), and news pub lished <strong>in</strong>the Ger man press—to test public re ac tion, which arrogantly spread the ru -mor about the de por ta tion of the en tire <strong>Romania</strong>n-Jewish pop u la tion,caused gen eral panic. /.../The re cently leaked news is <strong>in</strong> deed hor ri fy <strong>in</strong>g. It was learnt simultaneously<strong>in</strong> Bu cha rest (from Radu Lecca , gov ern ment representative of Jewish af -fairs) and Timisoara (from au then ti cated lo cal re sources):the decision hadbeen made for the de por ta tion of Jews from the ma jor towns ofTransylvania and Banat , i.e. from towns close to the Ro ma nian-Hun gar -ian bor der: Timisoara , Arad, Beius , Turda , Sighisoara , Brasov .The lead ers of the threat ened communities (Dr. S. Ligeti and I. Tennerfrom Timisoara , Aladar Lakatos from Arad, A. Fellter from Sibiu , etc.)gather <strong>in</strong> Bu cha rest to commence ac tiv ity. They are not sup ported by the<strong>Romania</strong>n Cen tral Jew ish Office, but re ceive assistance from the un der -ground lead er ship of the Jews. They do ev ery th<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> their power to hand<strong>in</strong> re quests backed up by doc u ments to all lead <strong>in</strong>g fo rums.The first benevolent action was taken by doctor Stroescu , family physicianof Antonescu and Director of the newly established Palace ofWar-Invalids, for which he tried to beg Jewish money by all means. Hestarts an action with great enthusiasm <strong>in</strong> the <strong>in</strong>terest of Jews, although thecondition of this is an amount of 100 million lei collected by Jews fromTransylvania and Banat for the Palace of War-Invalids.At the same time they ga<strong>in</strong>ed the support of His Hol<strong>in</strong>ess Balan , theMetropolitan of Transylvania. The old High Priest traveled from Palt<strong>in</strong>isto Bucharest just for this reason. His Samaritan action was supported fullyby Her Majesty Elena, the Queen Mother. It is said that this dramatic issuewas decided <strong>in</strong> the royal palace over lunch, to which Balan His Hol<strong>in</strong>ess,the Metropolitan, Ion Antonescu and the Queen were <strong>in</strong>vited, and whereHer Majesty supported with dignity and extreme firmness the cause ofthose persecuted.205
