Deportations <strong>in</strong> the Spr<strong>in</strong>g andAutumn of 1942The Chronological Order of EventsJune 7, 1942 - October 13, 1942June 7, 1942Due to <strong>in</strong>itiatives so far unknown, an order of General CorneliuCalotescu , Governor of Bucov<strong>in</strong>a , and under the direct control of MajorStere Mar<strong>in</strong>escu , Head of Cab<strong>in</strong>et, a new group of Jews was deported fromamong those who were still <strong>in</strong> Chernovitz . It seems that this plan wasaimed at the deportation of those 4,000 Jews who, dur<strong>in</strong>g the deportationof November, 1941 had been selected to for permission to stay <strong>in</strong> the townfrom Dr. Traian Popovici, ex-town mayor who had fallen out of favor bythen. /.../Some of the lists of names were com piled <strong>in</strong> April at the Gov er nor’s office,and two days before the de por ta tion, the county branch of the Ro ma nianCen tral Jew ish Office was asked to ur gently provide the list of the Jewswho re ma<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> the town un der the Popovici permit.The Jewish or ga ni za tions (both <strong>in</strong> Bu cha rest and <strong>in</strong> Chernovitz ) re ceivedthis <strong>in</strong>formation <strong>in</strong> time, but all of their attempts to pre vent this di sas terwere <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong>. Lead<strong>in</strong>g Ro ma nian au thor i ties, <strong>in</strong>toxicated by their il lu sorymil i tary suc cesses, re ma<strong>in</strong>ed deaf through out the sum mer of 1942. Theclerks were only pay <strong>in</strong>g at ten tion and hold<strong>in</strong>g out their palms to make aprofit from the misfortune of the Jews. Stere Mar<strong>in</strong>escu , for ex am ple, re -ceived 500,000 lei as monthly al low ance from the Jews before the de por ta -tion. This, how ever, did not pre vent him from ac com plish <strong>in</strong>g thede por ta tion with cru elty and bar bar ity.Under his order, patrols of policemen and soldiers jo<strong>in</strong>ed byrepresentatives of the Town Hall, <strong>in</strong> the middle of the night, went to theJewish homes selected accord<strong>in</strong>g to the prepared lists, and collected201
