June 28, 1942A new Black Sunday for the Jews of Chernovitz . Another Jewish group ofabout 2,000 is deported. The people are collected at night and at dawnunder the same barbaric circumstances as on the two previous Sundays(June 7 and 14). They were taken to the sports grounds <strong>in</strong> Makabi wherethey were the targets of mockery all day. The operations were once aga<strong>in</strong>directed by Major Stere Mar<strong>in</strong>escu . His helpers were Police CommanderTraian Ionescu and Manea Bocioaga , who was the co-ord<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g officer ofJewish issues <strong>in</strong> the governorship. Before that time, the latter person hadbeen the f<strong>in</strong>ancial executive of the governorship. On this occasion, peoplewho had been given permission to stay by the governor were officiallydeprived of it. /..../In the even<strong>in</strong>g, before the tra<strong>in</strong> departed, Major Mar<strong>in</strong>escu checked thefreight-cars. S<strong>in</strong>ce he realized that there was still room <strong>in</strong> them, at about19.00 hrs he gave an order to collect Jews from a few streets of the Rosadistrict. The freight-cars were still not completely full, therefore Mar<strong>in</strong>escugave another order <strong>in</strong> the middle of the night, accord<strong>in</strong>g to which, all Jewsliv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Pitei Street were to be collected. There were people among themwho had been given permission to stay only a few hours previously by theselection committee. /.../August 8, 1942S<strong>in</strong>ce Ger man troops arrived <strong>in</strong> the coun try, the German em bassy at -tempted for the first time to ac tively <strong>in</strong> flu ence the Ro ma nian gov ern mentand the gen eral pub lic <strong>in</strong> or der to ex ter mi nate the Ro ma nian Jewish pop u -la tion. Ev ery th<strong>in</strong>g so far had taken place ex clu sively on Ro ma nian <strong>in</strong>i tia -tives, and was car ried out ex clu sively by Ro ma nian au thor i ties. It is nat u ralthat the pursuits and crimes they ordered or allowed to hap pen, weremostly the pas sive consequences of the <strong>in</strong>fluential Nazi men tal ity. How -ever, <strong>Romania</strong> was not forced to do any th<strong>in</strong>g by the Ger mans, ex cept forthe demolish<strong>in</strong>g tra di tional Jewish com mu ni ties and sub sti tut <strong>in</strong>g themwith the Jewish Office. There were no rat i fied ob li ga tions to pre scribe theper se cu tion and ex e cu tion of Jews. The occurrences were the con se quencesof the fact that Ro ma nia had jo<strong>in</strong>ed the Berl<strong>in</strong>-Rome Axis.203
