Murders and MassacresOn June 29-30, 1941, at the Cen tral Po lice Station, <strong>in</strong> streets, and <strong>in</strong>houses the po lice along with Ro ma nian and German sol diers killed severalthou sand Jews <strong>in</strong> Iasi . 3Of those who sur vived the blood bath, 4,400 weredi rected to a con cen tra tion camp <strong>in</strong> Wallachia on board two tra<strong>in</strong>s. Theven ti la tion holes of each cat tle wagon were sealed, and 150-180 peoplewere pushed <strong>in</strong>side. Carbide had been left <strong>in</strong>side the wagons. Dur <strong>in</strong>g thejour ney two-thirds of the evac u ees died as a re sult of <strong>in</strong> hal <strong>in</strong>g the poi son -ous va por. The bru tal torture of the pre vi ous day cou pled with a lack ofwa ter had de creased their phys i cal resistance.In Podul Iloaiei 1,194 bodies were unloaded from the first tra<strong>in</strong> after adistance of 20 kms .., covered <strong>in</strong> 12 hours. 4From the second tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong> Tirgu Frumos (40 kms ..) 650, <strong>in</strong> Mircesti (85kms ..) 327, <strong>in</strong> Sabaoan (95 kms ..) 172, <strong>in</strong> Roman (110 kms ..) 53, <strong>in</strong>Inotesti (370 kms ..) 40 dead bodies 5 , and <strong>in</strong> the last station <strong>in</strong>Calarasi-Ialomita (563 kms ..) 25 dead bodies, 69 dy<strong>in</strong>g and 1,011 personswho were still alive were unloaded. 6 Of the latter, 128 died at the camp <strong>in</strong>Calaras . 7 213 The ex act fig ure has not been es tab lished. Based on the an -nounce ments of a m<strong>in</strong> is ter (I. Hudila )—the first to visit Iasi af terthe ar mi stice—of the Ro ma nian gov ern ment which came <strong>in</strong>to be -<strong>in</strong>g af ter 23 Au gust 1944, it is clear that the com b<strong>in</strong>ed num ber ofvic tims of the Iasi po grom and the death tra<strong>in</strong>s is more than12,000.
