Hav<strong>in</strong>g seen so many atrocities, the priest of the Orthodox Church,Stefanovici, the pastor of Banila , did not set foot <strong>in</strong> his church thefollow<strong>in</strong>g Sunday.July 5, 1941The <strong>in</strong>vad<strong>in</strong>g army organized massacres <strong>in</strong> the villages <strong>in</strong>habited by Jewsthroughout Storoj<strong>in</strong>et county. Eighty people were shot dead <strong>in</strong> Stanesti ,among them Rabbi Friedlaender and his two sons. In Jadova Noua dozensof Jews were tortured and killed, among them Weiss Moise , his child andsibl<strong>in</strong>gs, Weiss David and Weiss Urci .In Jadova Veche , Rabbi Gh<strong>in</strong>sberg survived after his beard was pulled out,his head was <strong>in</strong>jured <strong>in</strong> several places, and he was repeatedly bayoneted.However, Eli Schnitter and his wife, Bubi Engel, was shot dead. Many girlswere raped, and the beard of every old man was cut off. It will never beknown how many Jews were killed on that day, and how many later. Veryfew witnesses survived. The only certa<strong>in</strong>ty is that from among the 543Jewish <strong>in</strong>habitants of the two Jadovas only 80 survived the massacre andthe death march to the camps <strong>in</strong> Ed<strong>in</strong>eti and Transnistria .In Costesti and Hunita fewer than forty of the 400 Jews survived, the restwere killed; <strong>in</strong> Bud<strong>in</strong>eti, 6 out of the 8 Jewish residents were killed, amongthem Isidor Berghof , the Secretary of the Religious Community <strong>in</strong>Storoj<strong>in</strong>eti (his eyes were torn out of their sockets before he was shot dead);it is not known for certa<strong>in</strong> how many Jews were killed <strong>in</strong> Cires <strong>in</strong> additionto the Jungmann family, but their blood could be clearly seen <strong>in</strong> the dust ofthe road when the march<strong>in</strong>g column of Jews from Banila passed there. InValavca , on the <strong>in</strong>stigation of a peasant called Curichi , Zeida Krigsman ,Ioil Kluger , Aron Burman and his son, Bert Daubert , Zissu Lux, his wifeand one of his sons, Haiche Dermer , Stembrecher and his wife; <strong>in</strong> Milie ,Dr. Iacob Geller , the lead<strong>in</strong>g Zionist, who was flee<strong>in</strong>g from Chernovitz ,was shot dead together with his wife and one of his chidren , as well as thefive member Mehrman family, which was bayoneted to pieces.167
