Two patients were excluded from <strong>the</strong> study (no second stage). Of <strong>the</strong> remaining twelve patients,only one patient had persistent infection after <strong>the</strong> first stage; eleven patients received asuccessful re-implantation at <strong>the</strong> second-stage, and were followed for a mean <strong>of</strong> 18 months(range 3 months to 33 months).The diagnoses at <strong>the</strong> index operation in cases with infected arthroplasty are shown in Table 2Table 2 Index operation diagnosesDiagnosis N percentOsteoarthritis 5 62.5Fracture 2 25Avascular necrosis 1 12.5Total 8 100All <strong>the</strong> fourteen patients showed positive growth on extended cultures <strong>of</strong> intraoperativespecimens taken during <strong>the</strong> first-stage. Staphylococcus aureus was <strong>the</strong> most frequent infectingorganism found in 8 patients (72.72%) <strong>of</strong> 11 patients with positive preoperative culturespecimens; and in 10 patients (71.42%) <strong>of</strong> 14 patients with positive intraoperative culturespecimens.
