_Abrasion resistance:Oxinium implants are dramatically more abrasion-resistant than cobaltchrome implants.-Hardness :surface hardness is correlated with abrasion resistance as well as properties such asstrength and stiffness .The higher surface hardness <strong>of</strong> Oxinium component , coupled with astrong bending between <strong>the</strong> surface ceramic oxide and <strong>the</strong> metal substrate help explain <strong>the</strong>superior abrasion resistance <strong>of</strong> this material as compared to cobalt chrome.Damage tolerance : Damage to <strong>the</strong> surface <strong>of</strong> femoral component is always a risk .The damagetolerance to Oxinium was investigated by two standard tests(crater and groove tests).The resultsupports <strong>the</strong> premise that even <strong>under</strong> extreme conditions catastrophic failure will not result.Fatigue strength :The Oxinium component were found to support a minimum fatigue load <strong>of</strong>1.000lbs for 10 million cycles which is equivalent to a cobalt chrome femoral component <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>same design.Metal allergies and biocompatibility: Between 3_8% <strong>of</strong> population has been estimated to havemetal allergies .Many <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se people need a total joint replacement .But many not becandidates because <strong>of</strong> metal sensibility.
