There were 26 men and 15 women with a mean age of 25.6 years (range,16 to 29 years). The average duration of follow-up was 5.7 years (range, 4.0 to 6.5 years). Allsurgeries were done by a single hip surgeon and third generation ceramic-on-ceramicarticulation was used. Functional results were measured by Harris hip score (HHS) andWOMAC score. Radiographic evaluation was assessed for loosening and osteolysis accordingto Gruen’s and Delee and Charnley’s criteria. Results: The average HHS improved from 53 preoperatively to 95 at last follow-up andWOMAC score improved from 72 to 25. Thirty nine patients (51 hips) are continuing theirnormal occupation. There was no aseptic loosening or osteolysis and no prosthesis had beenrevised. There was one patient who complained of continuous squeaking and two patients withBrooker grade I heterotopic ossification. There were no other major complications. Conclusions: THA with third generation ceramic-on-ceramic bearings for AVN of femoralhead especially in active and very young patients results in satisfactory clinical and radiologicalresults at minimum 4 year follow-up.
