Introduction*Sujith Konan - University College Hospital - London, United KingdomFares S Haddad - University College Hospital - London, United Kingdom*Email: docsujith@yahoo.co.ukThe purpose of this study was to investigate the outcome of surgical repair of proximalhamstring tendon tears at mid term follow up.Methods46 patients were treated with surgical repair and intensive physiotherapy programme aftercomplete tears of the proximal hamstring tendon. The average time between injury and surgicalreferral was 2 weeks (1 day to 3 weeks). MRI was used to confirm the tear and plan surgicalrepair in all cases. Primary repair using suture anchors to approximate the torn tendon to theischial tuberosity was undertaken in all cases. Intensive physiotherapy was commenced in allcases with gradual increase in knee flexion based on the severity of the tear and the surgeon’sassessment of the surgical repair at the time of surgery. Patient satisfaction and return to sportswere used as measures of outcome.ResultsThe average hospital stay was 1 day. Apart from local numbness around the scars, there were nopost-operative complications noted in this group. High patient satisfaction was noted in allpatients at final follow up (1 year) which was also noted at 4 years. The average time to returnto sports was 6 months (5 months to 9 months). No re-tears were noted in any patients. In caseswhere dynamometer isokinetic muscle testing was undertaken, comparable results for operatedand non-operated contra lateral sides were noted after 6 months.ConclusionAt midterm follow up, early surgical repair and physiotherapy has been noted to be associatedwith a good outcome and enables an early return to sports after complete tear of the proximalhamstring tendons.file:///E|/ISTA2010-Abstracts.htm[12/7/2011 3:15:47 PM]
