hemoglobin was 4.0 with a SD of 1.1. A total of two patients were transfused in this series of83 patients for a total transfusion rate of 2.4%. The average length of stay was 3.4 days withthe SD of 3.7. No patients suffered a CVA, myocardial infarction or pulmonary embolus in thetwo-month postoperative period.CONCLUSIONSThe results show that even utilizing MIS surgical techniques and Symphony platelet gel, there is still substantial blood loss in patients undergoing unilateral total knee arthroplastyutilizing cemented components with a mean drop of hemoglobin of four grams or 20% of theirmean preoperative hemoglobin. However, in spite of significant loss of hemoglobin, mostpatients tolerated the postoperative anemia very well and there were no complications in thisseries related to anemia and this did not prolong their length of stay, which was an average of3.4 days. Only a very low percentage of patient’s in this series required a postoperativetransfusion (2.4%). This report supports the continued use of MIS surgical techniques alongwith Symphony platelet gel to minimize the need for postoperative transfusions in total kneearthroplasties.Friday, October 8, 2010, 15:00-16:00Session A15: Alternate Bearings 25-Year Results of a Series of 100 Consecutive Arthroplasties With a LargeDiameter Metal-on-Metal Femoral Head*Philippe Triclot - CHP Saint Gregoire - Saint Gregoire, France*Email: triclot@wanadoo.frPurpose of the study: to verify, after a period of 5 years, that no particular complicationovershadows the benefits of a large diameter metal-on-metal articulation in combination with aconventional femoral stem with regard to stability and functional result.Patients and methodsBetween October 2003 and May 2005, 100 hips in 99 patients were treated with an uncementedEmeraude stem and a Durom Resurfacing Cup made from cobalt-chrome with high carboncontent.
